It can be. Even something as simple as sharing hot chocolate in Bryant Park on a cold winter afternoon or evening and watching people skate

Northwest · M
No, but just about any spot, under the right weather/lighting conditions, can be a romantic spot, depending on the occasion and participants.
MrGomco · 36-40, M
No, when I think of New York I only think of traffic, smog, overpopulation per square meter and crime, however it has its bohemian magic, depending on the specific place.
@MrGomco What do you mean by "overpopulation"?? are tall buildings automatically "overpopulated"?? One very nice thing about the population density in NYC is that level of demand means you can find most of your necessities in a ten minute walk from where you live: food, clothing, household necessities, coffee shops, book stores, etc etc.

Regarding crime, NYC has 538.9 violent crimes per 100K population. That puts it 59th on the list of violence in US cities; exceeded by Jacksonville (631), St Petersburg (698), Miami (720), and Orlando (744), to name a few [data from wikipedia].

In fact, there are five whole states that have higher rates of violent crime per capita! I'm talking to YOU, Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, & Tennessee!!

Disclaimer: I do not, nor have I ever, resided in New York City nor New York state, although I have visited both city and state upon occasion. I collected this NYC data because I often see NYC wrongly badmouthed.
katydidnt · 61-69, F
@ElwoodBlues Totally agree; NYC gets a bum rap. There are many places where people could sport bumper stickers that boast "My Crime Rate Can Beat Up NYC's Crime Rate!"

But to the O.P.'s question: I think romance is what a person makes it. Central Park alone is basis for a sweet romance bumper sticker of its own. Ditto for "Under the Boardwalk" at Coney Island in the previous century. (Their boardwalk is now near ground level--far too low for hanky-panky, at least while standing up.)

that is a gorgeous picture

It can be , especially during Christmas in front of the Rockefeller center .
@SW-User All I felt out there in front of the Rockefeller center by the huge Christmas tree was cold. 🥶 lol
@SW-User exactly. Love it
It can be if you're with the right person
DownTheStreet · 56-60, M
One of my least favorite places to visit
DownTheStreet · 56-60, M
@swirlie yeah a bit of a drive. Everyone must be at church :)
@DownTheStreet even at christmas time ?
DownTheStreet · 56-60, M
@IWantANewLife never been there at Christmas, you wanna meet and ride around Central Park in a horse drawn carriage. I think that’s what your supposed to do.

I visited New York and found it, not surprisingly, over crowded, noisy, and it certainly did not come close to the atmosphere of this image! We stayed in a lovely brown stone building (Air B and B) in Brooklyn but the walk back from the subway in the evening was a bit scary. Never felt comfortable, sadly.
@SW-User i love nyc. Especially at christmas. All the pretty decorated lights.
It can be. Gotta know where to go.

Rats, needles on the ground, garbage stink, homeless lying in corners, and rabid muggers just looking to punch you for the fun of it? Motorcycle gangs speeding past pedestrian women so they can grab their bags and speed away? I think not.
In between the rats and rapes.. there’s romance..

It’s a Tom hanks Meg Ryan love story

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout that could happen anywhere
Nimbus · M
At one time.
Now avoiding the trash and general grubiness is not exactly a romantic setting.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
It's like any major city. Especially if you don't look for the bad areas.

The Riverwalk in San Antonio is romantic. Yet don't you ever go out of the tourist trap areas!

The unpaved areas of the Riverwalk are where all the drug pushers and homeless are. Heck even human trafficking.

I've been throughout this country and every major city has such places. They just don't get advertised.
@DeWayfarer i agree
Photopoetryographer · 51-55, M
The Battery Park City Esplanade is beautiful. Took a first date there, in a 10 passenger limo, to go roller blading and more. (Yes, a long time ago) I love the cobalt blue lights, my favorite color. You can see the Statue of Liberty, the Colgate sign, the North Cove Yacht Harbor with some amazing ships, Oasis Park, and all of the little gardens.
Quetzalcoatlus · 46-50, M
Very romantic! Took my wife there last year for Valentine’s.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
It certainly can be. Met my wife there.

I'm thinking whoever said no has probably never been to NYC or just not romantic.
swirlie · 31-35, F
@NoGamesTolerated
I know! And fortunately, neither did I.. 🤭
@JonLosAngeles66 Well I was speaking for me, dummy! 🥺 I don’t know nor care if you think it is romantic. Your business but what I think is indeed my business! Hey get a life while you are trying to insult someone!
@JonLosAngeles66 AND my comment still stands as MY opinion! Dang… are you sure you’re not PMSing?

I voted yes in your poll--probably should tpe somethng so you know who voted?

I guess you mean Manhattan by the picture ?

It is fun but it is so fast. People walk fast lights change fast, bikers making deliveries peddle fast I wouldn't want to live any of the burroughs but fun city to visit

I think my favorite things in Manhattan are being in Times Square at around 2-5 am / going down to the hudson, restaurant row, broadway, and those random, but fun, elevator conversations one can have with people who are from all over the world.
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
No I never get lost between the Moon and New York City. The song is beautiful the city is not
@KingofBones1 it depends where you go. Manhattan at christmas is beautiful
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
@IWantANewLife maybe so I've never been I've been invited by a friend if I can get back in touch with him maybe I will one of these days
It didn't feel that way to me when I was there but I guess it depends on context. For me it's just a crazy busy city and everything is big.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
I've been through there twice. Filth and angry people are not romantic.
@Crazywaterspring skip all the filth and graffiti and go straight for the pizza and Broadway plays… even a museum or two!
Nick1 · 61-69, M
Love happens everywhere…
swirlie · 31-35, F
@Nick1
That's called "meaningful sex", not love!
Nick1 · 61-69, M
@swirlie Love is the subject, not sex!
swirlie · 31-35, F
@Nick1
No, romance is the subject, not love.
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
I think it's magical and I get there every time I can.
ThaiGirl · 26-30, F
I don't know
But pic looks romantic
Pfuzylogic · M
Back in 1980, my returned first love lived in Providence and we went to the Metropolitan museum of art.
It was the time of minimalism where there would be empty rooms with various stages of light.
The city was filled with romance between the two of us.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I've never been there.
OverTheHill · 56-60, M
Romance is with the person that you are with. Romance can be shared most anywhere.

I grew up in the NY metro area. My wife grew up there as well. We now live far away in a semi rural area. We create our romance together.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
Ynotisay · M
There's a lot of components that itself to that. Maybe the ability to be private in public contributes. It can be a like a show you're watching from a distance.
Kstrong · 56-60, F
The excitement of the crowds in NYC, yet tou and your partner are self absorbed in the others happiness, that the throngs of people dont register on your radar
seaglass · F
No, I tend to think of Europe when I think of romance
swirlie · 31-35, F
@seaglass
So true! I remember watching a documentary several years ago about the filming of the Wizard of OZ movie in the 1930's.

It was revealed in the documentary that the Writer of the Wizard of Oz wrote in his notes while making the movie, that Kansas which was of course the setting, was actually a fictitious stage setting with the wide open flat fields covered with wheat for miles and miles.

As it turns out, the film setting for the Wizard of Oz was actually shot in Canada, not the USA and the place where the film set was located was in the Province of Saskatchewan which is prairie farmland.

The Writer's notes said "Saskatchewan Canada looks more like Kansas USA in the mind of America than Kansas does!".

But what most people don't know is that Kansas doesn't actually look anything at all like the Wizard of Oz movie otherwise presents it as, which is wide open flat fields of wheat for as far as the eye can see.

Kansas on the other hand, is very rolling countryside with a lot of fence lines and trees that separate farm fields from each other on every farm!
seaglass · F
@swirlie Well, I never knew... And I have only ever been on the border of Kansas, when I visited someone in Arkansas. I found the area to have a somewhat ominous vibe.
swirlie · 31-35, F
@seaglass

Interesting experience you had! What the Writer of Oz said in the documentary was that most Americans thought that Kansas had wide open spaces so vast that there was no other place on earth like it.

So what he did was, he found a place in the world that matched the perception that Americans had of Kansas, then made that place his movie set and then called that alternate location "Kansas" throughout the script of the movie and everyone bought it because nobody knew any better!

What nobody knew however, was that he didn't have to travel too far to find that illusive image of Kansas, as it lie only a short distance away on the north side of the Canada/US border! 😂
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
of all the major cities in various countries I've been to, not one has ever looked remotely like they do on postcards... 🤔
...sure, for certain times, places, and people.

When Steinway Hall was in its original location...it was magical, esp. its basement.

Well it might be romantic…but it’s dangerous in the middle of the road!
swirlie · 31-35, F
@soar2newhighs
Isn't the middle of the road dangerous everywhere else too?
mooncrest02 · 31-35, F
From everything tv has shown me it looks gross and like downtown LA but everywhere.. Not romantic.
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
I heard one of my former teacher describe New York City as being Toronto... On steroids.
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
19 years ago Battery Park looked charming with all those fat squirrels running about.
bobhall5868 · 56-60, M
It certainly CAN BE....it's more about who you are with, than where you are!
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
Yes....but not all of NY City is like that. But you can find those areas that definitely are
Elessar · 26-30, M
Maybe the nightlife? But I've never actually visited it in person, so I wouldn't know.
Jimmy2016 · 61-69, M
🤔......where's the pile of garbage bags on the street corners waiting to be picked up?.......
croatiangirl22 · 26-30, F

I had a very special day there so my answer is a biased yes.
KatyO83 · 41-45, F
Never been fortunate enough to go there.
kwood1 · 61-69, M
@KatyO83 Me neither 😐
Ramrod · 46-50, M

swirlie · 31-35, F

exchrist · 31-35
