If you could do space travel any way

Any way you wanted. What would it be? How would you wanna see space and travel through it? Like outer space.
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
I would like to travel in a ship that can bypass the limits of light speed by a significant fraction, but does so in a way that doesn't cause all the problems with time dilation that would be caused by actually travelling at an appreciable percentage of the speed of light. Something like the hypothetical Alcubiere warp drive that would contract spacetime in front of the ship and expand it behind.

It would also be nice to have some reliable artificial gravity system, whether that's a spin habitat or graviton emitters or what have you. And decent shields to protect from cosmic rays and micrometeroids and the like.

You know. Star Trek. I want to live in Star Trek.

@DunningKruger Love it! Let's tell the scientists to get on it!! Haha!
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
@Ananke Saw a paper a while back about some physicists who came up with some ideas on how to fix the problem Alcubiere had with his drive requiring negative energy in order to work, so, hey, it's coming along.

I worked in our Space program for 30 years, and space travel just doesn't appeal to me. I'm just an earth kind of guy.,
exexec · 61-69, C
@Ananke I agree. I love swamps and I love forested mountains. Drop me in either one and I will be happy.

@exexec 🧍👌
🏞⛰️

(that's me dropping you there haha)
exexec · 61-69, C
@Ananke Thanks
Stephie · 22-25, F
Absolutely not.

On the surface, everyone seems to be concerned by pollution, the reduction of our Co2 levels and other methods to make our planet a better place to live yet every single person that has answered this post with a positive answer just proved that they are not the least concerned about the planet and our wellbeing as long as they have their fun.

"Others can take care of our planet as long as I have my fun" would be the motto.
Stephie · 22-25, F
@Ananke No I did not think of that at all. If people have ever witnessed the launching of one single of those rockets that are sent in outer space and thought about the amount of pollution it causes, then they may change their opinions.

The same by the applies to cruise ships which are immense pollution sources.
Ananke · 26-30, F
@Stephie Oh I see! Ok! So the current method of space travel is WAY too bad for the environment. If we were to do space travel we would need to find a way to make it not horrifically damaging to earth to do so.

Thank you for clarifying!
Stephie · 22-25, F
@Ananke No problem and thank you for an excellent question.

Slow ship made from a mid sized comet with fusion engines and either hibernation (not my first choice) or as a virtual personality (much better!) Plenty of time to sight see and enjoy the trip! I'd follow the local galactic arm anti-spin looking for interesting planets to visit, maybe settle down on one and start a civilization!
Ananke · 26-30, F
@GerOttman A ship that is a comet would be SO cool. Oh wow you would be like a shooting star through space i love it. I also like the technology you incorporated into it to make it more liveable haha.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@Ananke The real limitation to exploring deep space is the human lifespan. Beat that and a lot of local space becomes accessible. If I could reach just 7 percent of light speed and extend my existence beyond 10,000 years distances of something like 50 or 70 light years are in my backyard so to speak.

@Ananke you unravel a huge thin sail. Then that is powered up to high speed by the sun's radiation.

Ananke · 26-30, F
@OldBrit Wow. That sounds super cool. For like...a space sailboat? That sounds awesome.
jackson55 · M
As soon as I can get my flying saucer restarted I’ll be off this planet.
Ananke · 26-30, F
@jackson55 good luck finding a good ufo repair guy nowadays is a nightmare. They always try to overcharge you.
jackson55 · M
@Ananke Can’t find anyone that wants to work at any price. Much less on this old saucer.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
I would love Destiny ship. I could have quite a crew living on that ship
Ananke · 26-30, F
@smileylovesgaming a destiny ship? What's that? It sounds cool.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
That would be fun but I'm afraid I'd come back to earth in year 3034.
Ananke · 26-30, F
@mindstruggle it would have to be fast!! Hahaha. But....in a way that was still safe. Lol. It's just too slow right now.
misterhat · M
I’m always in outer space in my head
On a giant cookie 🍪 of course 💁‍♂️
