Individual choice, and you know your son. I don't. I can only provide an insight from my own son. He had a cat with a similar deep connection. All through junior high and high school that cat would know just when to walk down to the corner, meet my son, and walk the rest of the way home with him. He couldn't take him to college with him which was hard on him. When he graduated and married, he took the very old cat back. It was in failing health, and he admits he spent a fortune at the vet's on him that he and his newlywed wife did not have, just starting out, and surely put a strain on the early days of their marriage.

When Gandalf, the Grey -- a solid light gray purebred Persian -- died, he chose (and continues to choose some 30 years later) cats that he rescues from the Humane Society and are mixed breeds of all sorts of colors looking nothing like Gandalf.

If my son wanted another cat, I would let hit pick it out. I do not think look alike cats are the answer, and what I mean by that as a "DOG LOVER, Rottweiler's" and even though the breed of dog I love all look similar. I like to see a litter of puppies and to choose the one I want by its shape and personality. So, I would think you son would like the same with his next cat.

Those are my thoughts dear.

They don't look the same to me!
So forget about that, looking alike. We are irreplaceable, all beings.
I like the new cat :)
But please don't try to get it because it reminds of the old. It doesn't. He knows it.

Mmmokay I just showed my daughter this and she yelled at me and told me it was a horrible idea! One of my worst ideas ever!!! If my son wanted a cat he would get himself one, and one that he wants not one that looks like Mr.Daisy! There I got my answer! Whola!

Personally I would go with a cat that looks entirely different than the first one. For me, it would be a constant reminder.

I go just to the local animal shelter. I like to find a cat a home instead of filling in a spot

It's the thought that counts.... all cats are sweet in their own ways

If there's a needy kitty and a willing companion, it's going to be fine.

it took a few tries we chose a female version of the breed with same markings
