My Life Strategy has Always Been to Cope with Stress by Working Hard

But now I realize that you can definitely over do hard work and while overworking might provide you with more money and success it can also halt some positive things by taking up too much of your time or providing an opportunity to avoid things.
Is there anything in your life that you find to be both a positive and a negative or that you wish you could learn to balance out better?

I have pretty good balance NOW regarding hard work, because I've managed to give myself tendonitis in BOTH wrists, and a trigger finger on my left hand. That's what happens when you work TOO hard.

@4meAndyou if I use that bengay stuff it keeps at bay somewhat. I can start off the day well but depending on how much I walk by the end of the day it's pretty bad. Ice at night helps also. It's frustrating when you need to do things and have to struggle with it ( I don't need to explain it..you know)

@ravenwind43 Yes, I do know. I use Walmart brand Icy Hot cream, which is a lot cheaper than Ben Gay, but I have to be very careful using it on my wrists, because I rub my eyes and blow my nose with those hands, and if I have a minute of absent mindedness, I get it in my eyes.

@4meAndyou Oh yes! I did that before and it's not a picnic!

I overwork but yet somehow the money isn't piling up on me despite NOT being a over spender. 🤔 it's annoying lol.
I'm a caregiver with two jobs. Balancing out time for myself is nearly impossible and does negatively affect my life. Knowing this doesn't not make changing it easy.

@ravenwind43 I understand 100% That's precisely my point you will never reach that amazing goal of being wealthy or having no bills just by working all the time and you will miss out on probably more important things.
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
@REMsleep Definitely!
This is actually a very underrated strategy. I have a similar mentality and it has actually taken me very far. For example lots of people talk about networking to find work. I never ever got jackshit done in my career by networking. Everything worthwhile has been achieved by simply brute force effort and winning the competition for the job by getting everything on the checklist.

People can fuck around trying to cheat the system but I have always come through by just playing by the rules and just winning the fair game outright.

@OliviaOfTheNight You sound like a very determined hard working man. Very admirdmable.
But make sure to balance.

I've done the same. I realized I've been working so much that I made myself lonely.

I'm working on fixing that, but I'm struggling to be honest.
in the past, work. but, i am semi retired now, so, thats not really an issue anymore. i only work 25 hrs a week or so now. which is way better than 60. LOL

I can totally relate
I work way more than I need to
And
It's my form of escape
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@Ferric67 take my advice try to disconnect a little bit more from work little by little I'm trying.

@REMsleep I've made a conscious decision to do just that once I achieve my current goal. I will cut back my hours and join a couple of yoga studios....it's what I had been doing pre-pandemic. Working less hours and finish my evenings at yoga.

many have worked themselves into an early grave with that philosophy...

once people get to 40-50 years old, they must learn to realize that their body can't withstand the punishment and stress that it did 20 years prior

my father learned that lesson the hard way; once by jumping/being thrown 30ft off a piece of machinery and landing on hard pavement, and almost exactly a year later via a heart attack that required an airlift

you just gotta learn to accept your limitations, and distance and/or avoid things that cause stress & hardship.

@wildbill83 Hope your dad is OK. Sounds like a harsh lesson learned. I'm always making excuses saying..." I"ll slow down once I have XZY" but I never reach my goal
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
My achievement expectations. They're way too high for no good reason.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@Queendragonfly There probably is a reason that you set your expectations so high. If you get to the root of that maybe you can release that pressure and find more balance. Also keep your deepest life goals in mind. I messed up by missing out on or delaying certain very important things for work.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@REMsleep It certainly is, I was reflecting on it today. It helped.

@SandWitch I've known for a while that what you say is 100% true but it's hard to change and easy to slip into bad habits.
Sometimes I don't even realize that I'm over doing things until people tell me that I'm crazy for taking on XYZ or whatever.
