What's the point of jail?

We spend so much tax moneh on it and jailbirds still can't be enslaved anymore in America. I get why it used to be a thing back then because it was slavery by another name. But now that times have changed, why are prisons used and no other forms of punishment? 🤔

If someone steals a bike or breaks someone's glass or pushes someone, why do we take years from their life instead of just simply punishing them? Do you know how long years are? Even worse, they network with other criminals even worse than they are and they're not in there teaching each other to behave 😂

Why do we take years and decades from people's lives in response to something small or simple? ,_,

Jail is a punishment though... what else is society supposed to do with criminals??
@TheBlackPowerRanger that is jail
@SweetNSassy no. Jail contains them in a small space and restricts what they can and cannot do. Exile is to remove them from the land and let them go away and be free.
@TheBlackPowerRanger well it comes them from bothering us and that’s all that real matters

It’s the only way to put adults in time out.

Okay. Sadly, In this country, money makes the world go round. There are some fairly deviated people who will do ANYTHING and convince people of anything just to help people make money. Helping people make money seems to be more important that doing what is healthy and right for the community. It’s a conundrum. For instance, The insurance industry provides grants for ticketing speeding cars. Yes, it important, but sometimes officers have to meet a minimum ticket quota for speeding. So they play hide an catch. It’s too bad people are not punished for real crimes. How do I know this? Because businesses include the average cost of losing money to thieves (and that’s ONE reason why we pay higher prices for products.) So yep. Not only do we pay taxes we also pay for theft. Basically the customer pays for it so the grocery stores don’t make a big fuss about theft. Weird and sad. Jail. Never been. I agree is hardly school reform.

USA itself operates on modern slavery, a person’s basic human right health insurance is tied to a job so the jail system isn’t surprising either

Jail is only a holding place before you have a trial, nothing more, nothing less.
@Pfuzylogic some people are sentenced to years in prisom tho here 👀

@TheBlackPowerRanger
Prison and jail are two totally separate entities. Jails are located at the county of offense. Prisons belong to the state and are used after the court sentences the offender.

Prisons is a place you remove people from society to protect the public from individuals who cannot function in society without stealing, killing or being generally violent..

Most members of the public who can function in society without breaking laws and threatening the property and lives of others are willing to pay taxes to fund the detention of people who make their lives suck by their law breaking behavior..

Of course Most people do not like High Cost penal systems which most of the western world penal systems have become.. Many would like to see a self sufficient penal system and see taxes diverted elsewhere..
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
So criminals should be free to continue committing crimes?
Mindful · 56-60, F
@cherokeepatti nope. Criminals are ignored or used.
@cherokeepatti no. They should be punished but the questiom is how. Does holding them away make them stop committing crimes? For some, it works. What about for others?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@TheBlackPowerRanger if they held they aren’t committing random crimes on the public
SpartanX · 41-45, M

@SpartanX yeah ,_,
I don't fully get it

Jail revenates a LOT of money
WSEIII · 51-55, M
The United States is too soft on drunk drivers. I forget which nation it is but one of them amputates their thumbs.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
I think we should cut peoples fingers off for stealing and robbery and burglary @WSEIII
Mindful · 56-60, F
@DeluxedEdition sometimes I think that too. But in America the government would end up getting sued, and the criminal given restorative surgery, and more compensation.

Small and simple is different than big and not simple.

Time is all we have man and it’s very limited.
SnailTeeth · 36-40, M
@SW-User It might be the only resource that humans can't reacquire once it's gone.
YoMomma ·
The point is to restrain them from doing more crimes

Unfortunately petty criminals get busted for dumb stuff while major criminals roam at large in everyones face.. Its maddening
@YoMomma ikr 😂
How is that a punishment?
YoMomma ·
@TheBlackPowerRanger lol well they are limited in other ways 😄
Mindful · 56-60, F
@YoMomma yep.
SnailTeeth · 36-40, M
I agree, the world is overpopulated, and we should have a year-long purge; where all crimes, no matter how small, are served with an immediate death penalty! We just need to acquire enough robot police to carry this out.
Mindful · 56-60, F
@SnailTeeth well Texas is planning to remove requirements on carrying permits for concealed weapons. No permit required and no need to conceal. So backwards. But people literally want the right to shoot in self defense in public. I expect both innocent and non innocent will be purged. Accidental shootings are pretty high.
SnailTeeth · 36-40, M
@Mindful I don't know what is wrong those people. Why can't they just admit that they like guns, instead of trying to tell us they need them for protection? If someone goes into a store to buy a gun for protection, they should be evaluated, because I don't think paranoid, delusional people should be walking around with automatic weapons. The American military incur so few casualties in modern-day war, that if the government did outlaw guns, they could easily take them by force, like the Australian government did to the real life Crocodile Dundee (In 1999, they shot a national treasure dead on his lawn, because he refused surrender his guns).

@SnailTeeth bruh wut
Straylight · 31-35, F
It’s an industry. The point is to get people in, keep them there, and use them as slave labor.
@Straylight I thought that private prisons are going to be shut down. It just made me think what the point of them as a punishment would be 🤔
And what other ways to actually punish criminals
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
I think rehabilitation should be the goal. For most criminals, something like psychology and doing community service would be fine. It's only a small fraction of criminals that can't be rehabilitated and should be severed from society or exiled.
Mindful · 56-60, F
@basilfawlty89 the percentage is small, but the numbers are high. Educating the wrong criminal, is scary. But they do have various courses they can take— even online— is what I’ve heard.
carpediem · 61-69, M
What is your suggestion on how to handle criminal behavior? Beat them to a bloody stump?
@carpediem for people who beat others to bloody stumps, that would be fair .-.
Justenjoyit · 61-69, M
It's not right, but the human race has not got the understanding to do much else sadly.
empanadas · 31-35, M
i will say the punishment can be unfair..however we need it in society because then everybody would do what they want without fear of being locked up
@empanadas if they change, how does the years lost in prison help anyone? We're talking years here bruh
Lilnonames · F
All jails get paid by governement for each day they in there
Mindful · 56-60, F

Can we bring back medieval punishments instead? Like putting people in the stocks and throwing tomatoes at them?
@SW-User that would be hilarious 😂
Mindful · 56-60, F
@SW-User that would work, but yes medieval
