What's the point of jail?

We spend so much tax moneh on it and jailbirds still can't be enslaved anymore in America. I get why it used to be a thing back then because it was slavery by another name. But now that times have changed, why are prisons used and no other forms of punishment? 🤔

If someone steals a bike or breaks someone's glass or pushes someone, why do we take years from their life instead of just simply punishing them? Do you know how long years are? Even worse, they network with other criminals even worse than they are and they're not in there teaching each other to behave 😂

Why do we take years and decades from people's lives in response to something small or simple? ,_,

They can bond out if allowed.
Jail is only suppose to hold until trial. Prison is the punitive action taken by the court.
@Pfuzylogic well you know what I mean

Jail can seem like a punishment but it isn’t. It keeps society safe until courts can determine the outcome of the offense.
@Pfuzylogic I understand the difference between jail and prison, but being locked up is a form of punishment, because they give people credit, from the time they served from sitting in jail, to when you get sentenced to prison.

Jail isn’t a punitive action though. It merely holds an offender until the outcome of a trial. Otherwise you couldn’t bond out and get back to your life.
@Pfuzylogic well some people are denied bond

Because of the nature of their crime and the chance that they would flee. I am sure Chauvin didn’t have a bond.
@Pfuzylogic or maybe because they are a danger to society, But I am just saying that being locked is a way of punishment and it keeps offenders from causing harm to society.
@SweetNSassy why does punishment not come to mind? Or rehabilitation? Why does just holding them there with literally the other worst people in a society of gangsters, killers, rapists, and drug lords help change them?
@TheBlackPowerRanger if you don’t follow the laws of society then you don’t belong in society🤷‍♀️
@SweetNSassy so why jail instead of exile?
@TheBlackPowerRanger that is jail
@SweetNSassy no. Jail contains them in a small space and restricts what they can and cannot do. Exile is to remove them from the land and let them go away and be free.
@TheBlackPowerRanger well it comes them from bothering us and that’s all that real matters
