Do you get frustrated in therapy?

I go over many anxieties and fears that are making my life very small. I feel hopeless and hanging by a thread, and have shared that fact too. When discussing traumas and subsequent fears that hold me back, because the therapist mainly just nods, I am always the one to try to find any healing tips or challenge my fear out loud. And I'm thinking, isn't my therapist supposed to challenge my thoughts at least sometimes??? I am there for input too, besides just sharing my fears or issues.

They did say to keep doing positive things I enjoy, but it's a Very blanketed statement. I really need some more reflection on my issues than only one line.
Do you ever feel that way?

Mine is quite different from yours where I was more physically beaten bloody as punishment as a child coupled with verbal abuse, and where I differ is it made me a very aggressive person. Inner city street gang fists fights from 1970 to 1974 before my parents moved us to the country. I played on the offensive and defensive line in high school in American football (Though undersized for the position) and became a state wrestling champion. I also was able to physically stop the beatings when I was 16 years old though the verbal never ceased. Then I went into the Army as a career for 27 years and the aggression grew with training and real-life combat seeing life taken and taking life in horrible ways even in hand-to-hand fighting.

So, I cross dress to cover the blood site smells tastes and visions when I look at myself in the mirror and to change into a non-threat weapon visibly (Though all the skills remain), to become soft and pretty (And definitely not for any sexual reasons at all)!!!

I need de-escalation and positive outlets for the war machine built into me. And my therapist cares and is an excellent source of help. She understands though never being where I have been.

I wished I could give you a fraction of my aggressiveness to help you come out of that shell. So, I do not know what to advise you to do.

Sorry.

@WillaKissing Thanks appreciate that. 🍁

@WillaKissing Thank you for serving ,putting your life and sanity on the line so the rest of us could sleep peacefuly in our beds . I admire your ability to function while somewhere deep inside you're still at war.

@kodiac Thank you.
My therapist says all war veterans remain at war inside themselves, All of us, but it is how we find ways to deescalate and refocus/apply those thoughts/memories and energies into something positive and useful and joyful for us is how we survive it. And I do.

Thank you very much.

I had a therapist like this and I felt like she was bored with me so I quit going, but my sister has a really good therapist who does suggest ways to cope.
My understanding is therapists are supposed to let you figure out what's best for you and what helps you that doesn't mean they can't give suggestions.
I personally wouldn't want to pay someone who doesn't help me.
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
I originally had therapist that slept through our group and one on one debriefs when I was serving when we came back from rough missions, so I know when I have a good verses bad therapist only collecting a check.
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
No, but I have a great therapist at the VA that understands and cares to help me cope.
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
I think sometimes they seem that way because your not the only patient. They see like 10 people a day everyday for years and the way we think isnt rational or else we wouldnt be there.
There are different styles of therapy
Maybe one where the therapist takes a more active interventionist role would work better for you?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@ThePatientAnarchist I agree, I may need to search again
Sounds like you should find a new therapist.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@MsSwan Yes as much as they are kind, and do listen, I really need a bit more input. I'll probably need to look soon 😟

I once was advised to try aromatherapy, but I think their recommendation stunk
pdockal · 56-60, M
Maybe your therapist isn't the right one for you ?????
Notsimilarreally · 31-35, F
You should look for a new one better suited for you
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Notsimilarreally No , you mean brain scan or?
Notsimilarreally · 31-35, F
@Coralmist hmm well it does read your brain waves! Look into it. I have an aunt who is a therapist and practices lens muerofeedback so I got to be her little guinea pig haha. It was great!
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Notsimilarreally I've not heard of it, interesting. I'll look into it, thanks.

@uncalled4 I agree, and while they offered a couple quotes on worthiness, that was helpful, that was months ago. I really need something helpful each session, especially when I've said, I often feel hopeless. I guess either many don't care or don't know what strategies to discuss. 🙁
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@Coralmist It's unrealistic to expect a watershed moment every session. They may just reinforce certain beliefs, kinda like I do with you.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@uncalled4 Not watershed but perhaps some takeaway, even if it's not life changing, something to even contemplate.
Sounds like you have a lazy therapist who wants to be paid just for showing up.
@Coralmist there is a school of thought among psychologists that think that people can just figure out their own solutions if they just talk them through. And if that’s really the case, then you can save your money because they just basically talked themselves right out of a job. I am lucky because my anxiety can be managed with medication. How long have you dealt with anxiety ?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@MayorOfCrushtown I've had chronic anxiety nearly twenty years 😢 I'm really wary and anxious about going on meds...theres anxiety for ya, ugh. Yeah that really feels like a super easy black and white notion, that simply them listening, is going to provide actual real solution or help. It doesn't unfortunately..not for more severe fears I've had.
Do you take meds daily or just if anxiety is creeping in , as neede
@Coralmist I take it daily. It’s helped quite a bit.
