What percentage of Americans would you say are in therapy?

Not enough!

According to my friend the successful therapist....WAY too many. She says its super common for people to seek out therapy, and look for a diagnosis, when it's not valid.
And I remember reading recently that something like 90 percent would prefer dating someone who has been in therapy. That just blew my mind. My assumption would have been the opposite.
.
@Ynotisay Interesting. I sometimes wonder how much of it is just sheer lack of attention from the people in their world.

@OlderSometimesWiser Not sure. I imagine there's a lot of factors that go in to it. But I do think, at least according my friend, that having a "mental health diagnosis" is almost a badge of honor to some. Particularly younger people. I see it as an accessible excuse. Doesn't negate how many are truly struggling with things out of their control though. But it almost diminishes their struggles.
IMO, some absolutely need legitimate professional help. Others will be better served by the "old days" method. "Suck it up and get over yourself."

It should be a requirement every so often. Just like yearly physical and such… then leave it up to the therapist how soon they want to see you back. Maybe it’s once a month, once a week, or in 3-6 months.

It should also be covered under all insurance coverage policies as preventative care. I think a lot more people would go if they didn’t have to pay an out of pocket cost, with deductibles and co-insurance

I dunno but a lot of us should be. I prefer bottling up my emotions and taking it out on everyone

We certainly live in a therapy culture.

I'm not sure how much we have to show for it.

My psychiatrist closed down her practice last year, but I still go to mental health I see my therapist, I have a nurse, and a social worker there. And my GP doctor prescribes my meds so it's all good!

100% of the therapists!

Conformity is required by law for all therapists.

What about the rest of the world? We were seed here by y'all. Where do you think our need for therapy comes from?
travelguy01 · 41-45, M
Too many are in the wrong kind of therapy. Revisiting past traumas doesn't do anything but keep bad feelings alive and make you falsely believe that you are bound by your past. This is a lie.
The only true path forward is to focus on the here and now, and set goals going forward. Many therapists don't do that, though. Then it simply becomes a never-ending cash cow for the therapists.

@travelguy01 You're on the money with that. In a lot of ways that industry is the Wild West and there's definitely therapists, psychologists and even psychiatrists who don't work towards what should be the goal which is not having someone come back. They indulge clients. Not all are like that of course. But it's not uncommon.

More people need to go
