I remember it with particular and specific distaste.. It was a neat way of displaying the written word but unlike a computer and printer there was zero way to edit your work.. I would have to do and redo and redo again - endlessly to craft the argument in a logical fashion ... paper was wasted, time was wasted and frustration was supreme.. With a computer I was free to go back and edit and amend what was on the page and ultimately never have to use paper at all to communicate my thoughts - but to transfer the work to someone else to read electronically... I disliked the written word on paper, I disliked the typewriter and I came to adore the computer... The ONLY good thing about the typewriter was that it forced me to learn how to type so when it came to using a computer, I was able to do so efficiently... The good old days were not as good as they might seem in nostalgia and tomorrow is not as bad as it seems.. YOU just picked one that did not invoke any kind of positive memory for me.. but it make me appreciate my Macbook ever so much more...

Are you kidding, typing was still an elective when I was still in High School. Glad I took the course now, didn't know how much I would need it today.

@calicuz I type it out fast, the auto spell check fixes some things but it messes up others, On proof reading I edit the document - if it is something important I edit extensively... The option to craft the document logically on a screen to convey what the reader is to see is to me heaven and the time to finished document is FAR faster electronically than it ever was any other way.

@calicuz My mom encouraged me to take typing in school because she knew we would all be on computers.

Riverman2 · 56-60, M

We had one when I was a kid but I wasn't interested in it. I wrote a few sentences just to try it out and that's it. My brother seemed to love it though.

Yes, I remember I hated typing class, I skipped it as much as I could.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
Yep. I was one of the few boys that took typing in high school, but I knew I wanted be a journalist/writer so figured I better. I got up to about 65 wpm on the manuals, and when the electric typewriters came in, more like 80 wpm., and with the PC closer to 100. Then along came the laptops and smartphones and the AI guessing at what I want to write whom I have to correct and everything has slowed down again. We are never satisfied until we've "improved" things into dysfunctional.

I definitely remember it and you are right, there was a certain something about the clicking, throwing that lever, etc.
LeopoldBloom · M
I pretty much went from a manual typewriter to a computer. I never used an electric typewriter much.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Yes I learnt how to type on a manual typewriter. I still do snappy hard strokes even on keyboards lol

I remember the electric one, with the correction tape ... 🙄

Yes especially fun in a classroom full of typists. I took Typing II the next year and we learned to use an electric typewriter in that class. And another office class where we learned to make newsletters and flyers where all the letters in each line except the last would end aligned up on the right side. That sort of skill that is obsolete now.

Yes...I'm old
exexec · 61-69, C
Yes, and I still have one but don't use it. Two things I hated were typing stencils for the mimeograph and using carbon paper.

Yes, but when I got to college, I went immediately to terminals, and have not looked back since.

A little bit. I had my grandmother's old mechanical typwriter and used it in early grade school for a few years. It had a charm to it but was a real work out.
