It is sometimes prescribed for nerve pain, usually when people have shingles. I have never heard of its use for arthritis. Normally, Celebrex is prescribed for arthritis right off the bat. My friend Tom was prescribed it, because his doctors thought he had neuropathy.

Gabapentin can cause life-threatening breathing problems (respiratory depression), especially if you already have a breathing disorder (such as COPD), are elderly, or if you use other medicines that can make you drowsy or slow your breathing, such as opioids or CNS depressants. Seek emergency medical attention if you have very slow breathing.
Some people have thoughts about suicide while taking seizure medicine. Stay alert to changes in your mood or symptoms. Tell your doctor right away if you have any sudden changes in mood or behavior, or thoughts about suicide.
Seizures may increase if you stop using gabapentin suddenly. Ask your doctor before stopping the medicine.
Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how gabapentin will affect you. Dizziness or drowsiness can cause falls, accidents, or severe injuries.
Do not stop using gabapentin suddenly, even if you feel fine."
