Gabapentin for Arthritis

So Joel's doctor is talking about putting him on gabapentin to help with the arthritis he has in his hands and shoulders. Has anyone taken it for this, does it help. I've read it can some crazy side effects.

I take a very low dose of it for nerve pain. It is the absolute only med that even takes the edge off of my nerve pain when it’s really bad. It can make most people tired or dizzy, but it’s really only made me tired. I took it for many years long ago and stopped and started taking it again a few years ago.

I take 900mg of Gabapentin every day for migranes. It works for them for the most part. I haven't had any side effects either. Hopefully it can help Joel.

@SleepingWithGhosts I think he's going to give them a try. He needs something to help with his pain. I hate that I can't fix it for him

@Cigarguy I get cortisone shots too. Has he thought about them for pain relief?
Cigarguy · 41-45, M
@SleepingWithGhosts no he's just started seeing a doctor for the pain. He's a bit more stubborn about doctors than I am.

It is sometimes prescribed for nerve pain, usually when people have shingles. I have never heard of its use for arthritis. Normally, Celebrex is prescribed for arthritis right off the bat. My friend Tom was prescribed it, because his doctors thought he had neuropathy.

"Warnings
Gabapentin can cause life-threatening breathing problems (respiratory depression), especially if you already have a breathing disorder (such as COPD), are elderly, or if you use other medicines that can make you drowsy or slow your breathing, such as opioids or CNS depressants. Seek emergency medical attention if you have very slow breathing.

Some people have thoughts about suicide while taking seizure medicine. Stay alert to changes in your mood or symptoms. Tell your doctor right away if you have any sudden changes in mood or behavior, or thoughts about suicide.

Seizures may increase if you stop using gabapentin suddenly. Ask your doctor before stopping the medicine.

Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how gabapentin will affect you. Dizziness or drowsiness can cause falls, accidents, or severe injuries.

Do not stop using gabapentin suddenly, even if you feel fine."

@4meAndyou thank you for looking that up. He has arthritis with nerve damage in his wrist and hands.
Most drugs have potential side effects. But my brother and my daughter took gabapentin and had no bad effects.

@Mamapolo2016 I've been on meds for years so I'm used to the side effects. But Joel does take any meds except for an anxiety pill when he has a panic attack. We just a little worried about it
@Cigarguy I doubt that anyone with any sense doesn’t worry about medications. The question is almost always, “Which would I rather put up with? The meds or the disease.”
Cigarguy · 41-45, M
@Mamapolo2016 he's in a lot pain right now and I don't like it.

I've taken it before for that and it doesn't.

I was on it for nerve pain before my neck surgery.

Not a fan, I called it my “stupid pills” as it seemed to take me 3-4x longer to accomplish tasks. Stopped the medication after about 6-7 weeks.

@Keeper he'd be on a low dose 1 or 2 pills 100 milagrams at night.
