Ok creationists: Stop characterizing the atheist position as everything came from nothing. [Spirituality & Religion]

What makes you think nothing existed? What makes you think nothing is even possible?
Anything but the bible?

Well then stop pushing your religious assumptions on the rest of us.

This has been a public service announcement.

That we're "evolved from monkeys" is amusing all by itself but I've seen some people extended it to chimpanzees and gorillas too. I think people who say that really can't know how different the theory is from their grasp on the theory.
@GlassDog

There are an amazing number of people who tell me that they reject evolution and then say something like that
GlassDog · 41-45, M
@Pikachu And also those believe in genes but don't believe in evolution.
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@GlassDog It's a common christian trick. They misrepresent their own, flawed, version of a tried and tested scientific theory as the genuine one - then proceed to prove it wrong.

What other phrase would you use to describe the vast emptiness of space?

Also, I would like both sides of this argument to stop deciding for everyone else that their position is the only right and true position on the topic.

I'm a Christian, but I fail to see why or how one view overrules the other.
"God said, Let there be light, and a Big Bang occurred, and there was light."
firefall · 61-69, M
@xixgun He made a blanket statement about creationists. YOU were dishonest and deceptive by assigning him YOUR presumption of his position, which to my eyes certainly seems a fit for the description 'bearing false witness'.
xixgun · M
@firefall Then I guess I'm bound for Hell according to you. Happy now?

It's funny that you take more offense at my comments to Pikachu than he does.

@xixgun
the vast emptiness of space
Nothing is ever entirely nothing.
'Space' is filled with virtual particles snapping into and out of existence, and generating a range of effects while doing so... including light, which appears from 'nothing'.
God said, Let there be light, and a Big Bang occurred, and there was light
a Big Bang occurred... the rest is unnecessary complication that contributes nothing.

I tell believers that even if there was a God, 1)I have no obligation to worship it.

2) The "problem of evil" has never been satisfactorily answered. As such, even if there was a God, I say "Fuck you, Dude. You allow innocent children to starve." I would never worship such a creature.

3) Worshiping under threat of pain (hell) is sadism. F that.
firefall · 61-69, M
but if they don't straw-man you, how can they achieve that sense of self-righteous superiority that is their birthright?
@firefall

it would be more difficult
Maybe we can stop glossing this as...

atheist nihilist materialist big bang people V theist non-materialist creationist people.

There are people who believe in God who assert creationism.

There are people who believe in God who assert evolution and the big bang.

There are atheists who believe in evolution and the big bang.

There are atheists who don't believe in modern science.

There are people who believe in God who are materialistic AF.

There are atheists who are totally not materialistic.

The whole position of the debate is screwed up.

I don't know what you want me to criticize about that position.

God COULD have created life using evolution. God could do whatever he wanted.
So if you still believe in god but accept the evidence that evolution has indeed occurred then i feel you've made a step in the right direction.
I dont want you to do anything other than simply condider there is no evidence for god yet people continue to live and die because of a belief in something without evidence
I don't need to consider it. I'm well aware of it and i consider faith to be an unreliable way of knowing.
But faith exists without or in spite of evidence and a perusal of my past posts would show that i don;t allow it to continue without opposition.

I'm simply acknowledging that accepting evolution (even if you believe that god is behind it) is a wiser position than denying that evolution has occurred.

Please stop engaging with people of faith. You have science, logic and truth on your side. Isnt that enough. Do you really have to poke those weak enough to need God as a crutch with a stick? Thats tantamount to bullying the disabled.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@suzie1960 I agree with your point. The current crop of Jim Jones and Scientology are the same as the Mormons of last century and the followers of the God of Abraham a couple of Millennia ago. Its an old enough issue and there is not shortage of stupidity in it all. But really, with science now and information out there, there is less excuse every day for this stupidity.
ms20182878 · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman I'm a person of faith and I don't feel the least bit bullied. And I am, btw, disabled. I enjoy the dialog.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@ms20182878 I am happy for you that your faith brings you some comfort.
ms20182878 · 61-69, M
From your perspective, where did everything come from?
@dunpender

No worries. It just makes it hard to tell who you're talking to, not to mention that the person to whom you're replying may not be alerted that you replied to them
ms20182878 · 61-69, M
@Pikachu I must say that your position is a bit confusing to me. Is it your position that everything came from something, but that there was no creation involved in any of it... it all just happened somehow?
@ms20182878

My position is that we came from some state of existence the precise nature of which we are not certain.
Could even be nothing but i've never seen nor been presented with any reason to suppose that nothing is even possible.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@Pikachu You liked my first meme, so you let it remain. You didn't like the second one so you deleted it.

Be honest.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@HoraceGreenley Still makes more sense than Sky Daddy clapping his hands and then spazzing about what kind of fabric people wear 🤷‍♂️

But really atheism doesn't require any of that stuff. People were atheists before there was a theory of big bang or evolution. It's ok not to know how things came about, the point is not inventing fanciful explanations with no grounding.
@HoraceGreenley

In fact i didn't like your first meme, i was just giving you a free pass on your first post since i know you find it very difficult to articulate and idea which has not been presented to you in the form of a picture with a snarky caption.

All clear?
