After this I’m going to try to stop beating this particular dead horse…

But regarding Charlie Kirk…
I’m not celebrating his death. I am amazed at the irony by which it occurred because one rarely sees such karma in real time. I hadn’t thought about him before the shooting, and he likely won’t remain in my thoughts once he’s out of the news.

But to folks like the fellow yesterday who called me "evil and cruel" and wished me harm because I can’t quite love my enemies (and who demonstrated he’s no different):

Suppose this had happened to Louis Farrakhan or Al Sharpton ? Would you be urging all this compassion and empathy for their loved ones ? Call me skeptical; I know my countrymen.

I'll admit when the news first broke, I had to Google his name. I'd heard it, but not what he said--indeed, I have no use for statements like his.

When Sharpton got stabbed on the street in (I recall) the 90s, some commentator said. "I don't like the man or his statements, but I am NOT in favor of this. Get well soon, Mr. Sharpton". Hell, I walked right past him in Manhattan. Just another man in the street. I didn't say hi. But in no way would I be pleased if someone violently took him out.

Sure, there are plenty of us who draw a line between divisive figures and their families. I think it's barbaric to think otherwise.
@samueltyler2 I also know that he was persona non grata, but I would never credit Trump unless he wanted something from him. In our community, Sharpton was always still respected as someone who could get the authorities to at least listen when they ignored the rest of us.

I’m sorry, did I mention "slavery" at any point ? Emmett Till’s torture and murder for supposedly whistling at Carolyn Bryant happened during your lifetime. And the revelation that she had lied came out before her death in 2023.

The late Ed Bradley, who was usually so cool and calm, once asked her during an interview, practically spitting out the words,
"How does it feel, having gotten a child tortured and murdered ?" She didn’t answer. 😞

@bijouxbroussard i used the term, on purpose, to bait and far right crazy reading this post.

I mentioned Trump because it was Sharpton's sharp rebuttals and counter attacks against so.msnybof Trump's crazy comments and actions which helped refine Sharpton and get him front and center in the media.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@bijouxbroussard I was standing under the Mid Hudson Bridge as he marched. Amazing to see.

I didn't know Ed Bradley, but seemed like a good guy, used to see him near the 60 Minutes set.

I don’t celebrate the individual’s death and knew nothing about him other than he wasn’t of any interest to me personally. However I refuse to whitewash the facts, he was a right wing extremist and Christian nationalist. His death was the result of a conflict between GOP supporting activists that didn’t agree with each other’s views. The GOP then tried to make the narrative suit their agenda and pull the Democratic Party into it. We had no part in this unfortunate event.
@AbstractWave Exactly, and we rarely do. Our platform isn’t the one that advocates picking up a gun to solve all problems.
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
Yes. This is all correct. Kirk’s death is an utter tragedy, but the intense reaction to it is insane. That my team (Chicago Cubs) decided a moment of silence was appropriate for Kirk begs the question of who on the left this would be given for. He was not a politician nor a humanitarian. Nor would he have claimed to be.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@luckranger71 The Yankees did the same, then followed it the next day with Trump in their locker room while they fawned over him on the Anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers. :(
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Sorry you have to deal with the haters, but that's today's world. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those people attacking you weren't among the partiers when Bin Laden was taken out; people were drunk and dancing in the streets that night.
@ChipmunkErnie Really ? You think they would’ve been openly celebrating one of Obama’s accomplishments ?
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@bijouxbroussard Yes, though they would do their best not to give Obama any credit for it.
@ChipmunkErnie Of course.
Zaphod42 · 51-55, M
These are the same people who called Pelosi’s husband’s attack a job half done. These are the same people who called the assignation of the Minnesota lawmakers a good start. These are the same people who thought the J6 insurrectionists were political prisoners.

I wouldn’t give their opinions of you a second thought 🤷‍♂
@Zaphod42 Exactly right. And the same folks saying “Blue Lives Matter" (even though police died as a result of Jan 6).
GuiltyBiStander · 31-35, F
I would.

When it comes to controversial public figures who meet with violence, their familes face all of the grief and usually deserve none of the blame. Ordinary human decency means you respect their loss.

But I've got to say that regardless of the all the angry, sad, confused, and deceitful reactions playing out in such predictable ways - This latest crime will change nothing.

The infection we've allowed to grow in our politics will have to burn itself out like a sick fever.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@GuiltyBiStander i would normally agree 100%, but this political situation is very different. It includes terrible misinformation, an attempt to rewrite history, and is placing the US into an existential crisis. I do feel badly for the children, his spouse however was part of his efforts, and from what I read, he and she managed to gain a "small fortune," from his political activity.
breezyboo · 31-35
I had no idea who this kid was. And, to be honest, I am proud of myself for not knowing who he was. I don't traffic in hatred, paranoia and delusional thinking of a white "man". I don't spend my time lurking in areas of the internet that spread fear of "others" ... because I am secure with myself.

I feel equal parts of fear and sadness for the impressionable minds he has brainwashed.

I am under NO illusion the president saw this young man (with a family) as anything other than that of a puppet master to young voters. That's why he is scrambling to make his death more than it is ... a death of an arrogant white man who thought he could do and say whatever he wants with no repercussions. You reap what you sow.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@breezyboo exactly
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
People are hypocrites they celebrated George Floyd's death, including Charlie Kirk, he was the main cheerleader saying drugs killed that man and not the Caucasian knee that was on his neck, even though the coroner said different. George had a child too they didnt care, even police on social media were sending memes of that man's death. It was funny right? But whose laughing now? Its all fun and games until its at your doorstep. I dont care if he was on drugs just like every mass shooter he deserved his day in court. Its okay for them to do it but let someone do it to them and its like World War 3. No one deserves to have their life snuffed out, no one. But what goes around comes around.
breezyboo · 31-35
@AngelUnforgiven I am glad people are speaking out about the hypocrisy in this country. We, as a nation, have selective memory ... and it is starting to really annoy me.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@breezyboo I feel that 100% 💓 thank you!
breezyboo · 31-35
@AngelUnforgiven You are welcome, lovey! 🙂 ❤
We can see how the right-wing reacted when some democratic politicians were killed. The contrast is STARK.

A Tale of Two Presidents

(shamelessly stolen from @DrWatson)
@ElwoodBlues Exactly. I think what annoys me is not that our representatives usually try to "go high", but that the other side neither acknowledges nor respects that they do.

And they ignore that their representatives almost never do.
breezyboo · 31-35
@bijouxbroussard Ugh, I think it's much more insidious. They think when we act with sincerity, intelligence and humility = WEAKNESS. All while clutching their Bible 🙄
@breezyboo That’s what I’ve observed—they don’t respect it, but they’re the first to claim we’re "celebrating" and "cruel" if we dare mention that the deceased was not worthy of being canonized.

Meanwhile, their leader makes all kinds of tasteless "jokes" with impunity.
Lsreading4200 · 31-35, F
Yeah it's bs 😭😭
TheYawnArchive · 46-50, M
I see this case as an orchestrated rallying call for the Right, like the "attempt" on DJT last campaign trail.

@bijouxbroussard Kirk said that some patriot should go bail out the assailant after that one

A rare soft on crime position from him suspiciously
@EBSVC Well, yes. Law and order only when it suits them.
EBSVC · 36-40, T
@bijouxbroussard He always knew what he was doing when he spoke and he was the best at never “really” saying what said
