Would you consider having elocution lessons? Would you consider making your children have them if it's already too late for you?

Being well spoken helps one acquire a more prestigious and emotionally fulfilling careers. When I overhear young people on the bus and other forms of public transport- even if they are able to refain from swearing- I'm aghast at some of the regional accents I hear and find it hard to believe they will ever have an edifying career.
Gloomy · F
Your satire of old conservative bourgeois peoples mindsets is perfect.
SwampFlower · 31-35, F
@WandererTony Even if it's not, I talk worse than Reba and I bank over a quarter mil a year. But then again, Reba probably has me beat.
SwampFlower · 31-35, F
@SwampFlower Also, I just noticed the grammatical errors in OP's post. Surely, it is satire and I need to go to bed.
WandererTony · 56-60, M
@SwampFlower I just glanced through her previous posts and the pattern is definitely clear. It looks down on the younger generation and their ways in a stiff upper lip sort of way. With a multi generation gap.
If it’s intentional satire, it’s of a class too high for most of us SWeeps. 😀
assemblingaknob · 26-30, F
No, because I'm not ashamed of my regional accent.
Bellows · 61-69, F
@assemblingaknob it's not so much what you feel, its what others feel when they hear you.
assemblingaknob · 26-30, F
@Bellows yeah, it's not so much what you feel, it's what others feel when you are judgmental towards how syllables roll off different tongues.
SatanBurger · 36-40, FVIP
@Bellows You obviously only choose to be friends with people who are a similar mindset to you, no wonder you're ignorant.
Are you married to AndysAttic?
SwampFlower · 31-35, F
Absolutely not. It is part of my culture and who I am. If someone has ever passed me up for a job because of the way I talk, so be it. I didn't want to work there anyway. My qualifications speak for themselves.
assemblingaknob · 26-30, F
Fairydust · F
No, it’s not for me, I am what I am.

I won’t change my voice to fit in with others ☺️
WandererTony · 56-60, M
You serious or trying to be sarcastic?
Piper · 61-69, F
@WandererTony I've wondered that too, every time I've seen a post by "MsBellows".
@Piper I think someone is caricaturing or parodying some rigid narrowminded ultraconformist from their past. Just a hunch though; I don't know anything more than you.
Piper · 61-69, F
@ElwoodBlues I think that is likely. It's hard to believe that someone could be this much of a supercilious twit. Possible, but unlikely.
TexChik · F
Pompous pretense is very off-putting.
SatanBurger · 36-40, FVIP
There's no wrong way to speak, it's just different slang and dialect everywhere you go. You really know nothing about people or what they're doing with their lives.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I speak in front of groups all the time, without having taken elocution lessons. And I have found my career in academia to be quite fulfilling.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
No. But I sometimes think that I should get some cards made up that offer elocution lessons to other people!

Edit: not really elocution but diction. Any accent or dialect can work so long as people speak speak clearly. Anyone in a position where they might need to communicate something important to someone from a different place should at least express themselves clearly. People such as policeman, bus drivers, ticket clerks and collectors, etc.
Penny · 46-50, F
with the amount of media there is that can demonstrate different ways to present yourself linguistically, i think most people choose to talk the way that they do purposely and dont give a flying fuck about having an "edifying career" lol, but honestly, i think it would be a nice thing to learn personally regardless of what they did with it
Morrigan · F
Your posts always make me chuckle, thanks 😊
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
I love regional accents. They make life more interesting. All that matters is whether you have anything worth saying and how clearly and persuasively you can express yourself. Plenty of 'well spoken' people fail on both measures 😐
No.
That's idiotic.
People aren't like furniture that you stain and polish.
Fairydust · F
@Bellows

You sound like a snob. Sorry 🙄
@Fairydust okay. It's fine by me if you hate the way I "sound".
Fairydust · F
@Roundandroundwego oops sorry I meant the poster not you. Lol 😂
exexec · 61-69, C
No. My southern accent fits me. I do think it is important for people to use correct grammar
I’d consider electrocution lessons. Always wanted to leave my enemies a little charged up
Piper · 61-69, F
Nah, and people with regional accents are very often quite "well spoken".
WolfGirlwh0r3 · 36-40, T
I dun Don't Need No All-oh-cushion lesions! I talk Anglitch very good!
