No! That is definitely not good for you to be breathing in. That can damage your lungs!
Inhaling smoke from a fire pit can cause a range of symptoms, including:
Coughing: The heat, chemicals, and other particles in smoke can irritate your airways, causing your body to produce mucus
Headaches: Carbon monoxide in smoke can trigger headaches, which can be a symptom of carbon monoxide poisoning
Eye irritation: Smoke particles can cause a burning sensation and redness in your eyes
Chest pain: Smoke inhalation can irritate your respiratory tract, which can lead to chest pain
Confusion: Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause confusion
Shortness of breath: Fine particles in smoke can cause difficulty breathing

@Lilymoon that's awful. You shouldn't have to do that. I hate that you have to put up with that. There must be something that can be done. Could you write him a nice note and tell him you have respiratory problems and the smoke is causing you big problems? Or maybe you should call the health department but then that could really cause big problems. This is not healthy and burning coals like that can cause lung cancer

What does he burn in it and how much of the smoke comes to you?
I can smell smoke constantly since September until April because people heat with wood stoves. In summer it's mostly from the barbecues in the woods so wood smoke is a natural thing to me. I don't say it's harmless but it only seems like a problem to me if people burn all kinds of junk, plastic and electronics or if I'm exposed to very high concentration of it. That being said, it's definitely a big problem if you can see it and it's blown directly into your face on a daily basis.

Any smoke you breathe in unintentionally is definitely bad for you. In fact during the milder months, people burn leaves by the side of the road here in town Pretty bad if you have weak lungs 😔

Called my burn line number today and it said I can burn from 10 am to 7 pm. I have a big brush pile to get rid of. My neigbors wont care because they do it too. Thing is though our houses and properties are spread out pretty far from each other. If I lived in a regular suburban neighborhood and frequently had a firepit going I could see how that would annoy my neighbors and even make it unhealthy for them, especially unhealthy for the sensitive groups. When wood is burned it releases a bunch of stuff into the air that isnt good. The worst is the particulate matter in the air that can cause problems for people's health.
NativePortlander1970 · 51-55
@morrgin Specially those of us on assisted oxygen.
XDHyperGirlXD1 · 31-35, F
It only good if the firepit is cooking chicken 😌
SethGreene531 · M
Certainly better than a tire fire. Wood perhaps is better than charcoal or fire logs, but any inhaled substance over time can be detrimental. Every night is a tad excessive.
Shame the winds/Yard juxtaposition is unfavorable.
You could have a casual conversation with him about it. But relations as neighbors after well intentioned "chats" can be unpredictable sometimes.
Is a fire pit against city ordinances at all? The fire dept. could just "inadvertantly" roll up one night without your knowledge, whatsover.🤷♂️ 😂🤭

@SethGreene531 yeah I actually looked into it... it's legal if it's at least 13 feet from neighbors or trees. His I think is around 10. I'm not gonna say anything but at least I know 😬
SethGreene531 · M
@LilymoonHe's 3ft over 🤔. I see. Save that bit of knowledge for a bigger issue down that road, for leverage 🤭
LOL in all seriousness, I love the smell of a woodfire, I'd hesitate to call too.. Maybe he'll invite you guys over!
My old neighbors..a young couple had one too. It was surrounded by trees but 20 ft above the pit.
The nosey older lady to my left squealed on them, then the pit disappeared.
Shame, cause all their friends would come and have a really nice respectable party late into the night.😞 They didn't get company often.

@SethGreene531 oh we've been over over there it's pretty cool just the smoke can get in your throat after a while *cough cough* 🤓
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Well it is smoke and no smoke is good for you and is it legal to burn in the city?

Inhaling smoke is not great for you. Even natural wood, with no accelerants. If it's a small open fire pit, chances are by the time it gets to you, and it's not like billowing smoke suffocating you, as in you can kind of smell it, but the smoke is not in your face, it's OK.
Then again, it depends on what they're actually burning.

Paranoid? No, but if it's the occasional whiff then I'd not worry much, but if it's a daily thing with heavy smoke, then yes, it is toxic and you shouldn't be breathing it.
Zaphod42 · 51-55, M
My neighbors do to, but I rather like the smell of a wood fire 🔥 🙂
Elessar · 31-35, M
There's no smoke that isn't harmful. Especially if it's continuous. Definitely not paranoid
smiler2012 · 61-69
@Lilymoon 🤔i rather suppose it depends on what you are burning and the toxic fumes it gives off
Pretzel · 70-79, M
should be okay unless he's burning garbage or pressure treated lumber
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
I don’t think that smoke is good for you
LeopoldBloom · M
You definitely don't want to breathe it. If you live out in a rural area, it won't hurt you, but a bunch of people with wood fires in the city is a bad idea. When we lived in Oregon, we heated our house with wood, which was a huge pain in the ass. I found out that Oregon has the highest percentage of people with wood heating than any state.
LeopoldBloom · M
@Lilymoon You must be in Australia. In Oregon, people burn wood during the winter.
Lilymoon · F
@LeopoldBloom no Canada ... but he doesn't generally burn it outdoors then
LeopoldBloom · M
@Lilymoon Right, you're talking about a firepit, not a chimney.

Very inconsiderate of neighbours 😒. I hate wood smoke 😢
Lilymoon · F
@SW-User Yeah 🤷♀️
beermeplease · M

Lilymoon · F

@NativePortlander1970 what a great idea. Doubt he'd do it. He's a young guy that has a lot of parties. I think he likes the smoke lmao
NativePortlander1970 · 51-55
@Lilymoon Just let him know that if he doesn't get that smoke under control, the city can start fining him under anti pollution laws.
