I give wrong directions to tourists on purpose if they can’t correctly pronounce the destination.

And here in Cornwall some place names are Celtic rather than standard English.

If you’ve found a clear patch on a busy beach, thank me. And if you’re the unfortunate tourist who never found the beach, thank me.

It would appear judging by the comments that a lot of people cannot take a joke.

That’s really mean of you, an act of inhospitality.

@Morvoren a stupid reply from an idiot
I won’t stoop to your low level
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
@Strictmichael75 of course I can
Imagine someone giving you the wrong directions in Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, New Orleans, Philadelphia, etc.
@cherokeepatti Similar thing happened to a group of us on a business trip years ago in Philadelphia. Four of us in a rental car got lost in the city. We found a cop and asked what part of town we were in...he said, "bad." He told us to follow him, and helped us get back to our hotel.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@BizSuitStacy glad you made it back safely. Sometimes tourists die when they get lost in cities
@BizSuitStacy you're not likely to get shot in Cornwall if you take a wrong turn tho.
Lukeman · M
You should have posted this in doing bad. You are one of those people I would never want to meet.
Jessmari · 41-45
We just say: "You can't get there from here"

it is insulting when someone comes into your world and doesn't pronounce correctly. it's like their not even trying.

i'm from Newfoundland and lots of people get it wrong. it really doesn't get annoeying at first, but it's like no ones trying after awhile. so yeah i get it.
turnedtostone · 56-60, F
@darcdragosen Just like improper sentence structure,what an annoyance.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@darcdragosen So it’s better to be “proper” than kind to people.
darcdragosen · 36-40, M
@cherokeepatti i still believe in being kind, i just mean that it's annoeying when someone is mispronouncing your place name and they keep doing it even after you try to correct them and they just keep mispronouncing it like they've decided their way of saying it trumps the actual one. .. actually, if someone just started with "i can't get it down, sorry" i would understand completely ... but maybe it would be a better world if we were all nice and understanding and let all this slide... I know I got stuff to work on, especially when something sticks in my craw .. i guess the most understanding conversation would be them misprouncing, me kindly saying that hurts my feelings and then them saying sorry i'll try harder .. that would be an ideal encounter in my opinion.
TrashCat · M
I did that once to a Canadian couple from Quebec who were looking for Hampton Beach in NH. I know they spoke English but refused to. Sadly for them, Im not fluent in French but i understand enough to understand their shit talk. lol
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@TrashCat They can be a little sensitive about language :P

Big double standard if you got to Quebec and don't attempt to speak French you get frozen out too.
TrashCat · M
@JimboSaturn NO SHIT!!! 😂😂😂

I've had my dealings with many an Irate Meme' too
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@TrashCat When I say a little , I actually mean A LOT :P
darcdragosen · 36-40, M
thats hilarious. .. i never ask for directions, being lost is part of the adventure.
darcdragosen · 36-40, M
@cherokeepatti i like the old school fold out maps, older the better. on deer hide with only vague directions to go by. .. i don't think direction is that important cause how often have you planned something out step by step and then that plan actually happened??
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@darcdragosen yeah I used to use those. Some of the map apps will show you when traffic is congested or blocked and I like that. Paper maps can’t do it. When there’s a bad accident the police will shutdown traffic and drivers have to make detours. It can be dangerous getting lost if you aren’t used to driving in a certain area of a city and have to detour. It happened to an elderly man who was driving to the VA medical center in Oklahoma and he got robbed by intimidation when he stopped to ask for directions. That part of the city is still really bad. They had a shooting at a senior apartment complex this morning and it’s just a few blocks from the OU Medical Center and the VA Hospital.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@cherokeepatti You don't want to be taking a detour in Cornwall lover. Not unless you be ever so good at driving backwards.
firefall · 61-69, M
Wait ... people go to Cornwall ... voluntarily?
firefall · 61-69, M
@Morvoren To be fair, when we were living in London, we twice tried to get to Cornwall for a weekend, but both times the car chose to break down rather than face ... Cornwall.
I bow to its superior mechanical foreknowledge.
Morvoren · F
@firefall It must have been a Ford.

There are some crackers here in Scotland too.

I’m Irish, and Cornish names are easy to pronounce for me 🙂
Strongtea · 22-25, M
That’s kind of mean, but a little bit funny.
HannahSky · F
I never minded giving tourists directions when I worked in a tourist area. They were usually appreciative and I'd rather they have a good experience than negative. Some didn't speak any English, it was fun to try to figure out where they were wanting to go.

turnedtostone · 56-60, F
How nice of you
darcdragosen · 36-40, M
one question. if i have a book with me and i'm trying really hard to pronounce it correctly and i can't just get it right. do i get a bit of sympathy?
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
@darcdragosen You should
darcdragosen · 36-40, M
@CrazyMusicLover shhhh, i'm trying to stay hidden.

assemblingaknob · 26-30, F

How do I get too Bo dia ga bay ?
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
My dad used to do the same thing as a joke. He'd invent hilarious names of roads like Protozoan Street and such.
