@AbbeyRhode good for you!
Umile · 41-45, F
It is so interesting. Because it's different from our norms.

Makes sense though. It's according to whats available and what that place is used to.

Rice is even added to popular food chains.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Umile I’ve definitely seen how other cultures have become more popular and integrated with our everyday meals here in the UK over the years.
Umile · 41-45, F
@Primnproper that is so cool

When I have traveled in the past, there were times when we were served gorgeous crystal pitchers filled with ice and water and we could not drink it. It was like dying of thirst in a desert and still having to look at that water. (That was in Andorra).

In England, we ordered the full English breakfast, of course, and being slightly adventurous, I ordered the smoked kippers...which were so awful I could not eat them.

In Ireland, the family we visited served a giant salmon on an enormous serving platter, with the head and tail still on the fish...and I had never seen such a thing in my life...and could not eat it. (I would now, of course).

Also in Ireland, we were taken to a Pub for lunch, and again, as an adventure, I ordered the steak and kidney pie...(because I had heard of it). And I never tasted anything so awful in my life...except, maybe, for smoked kippers.

In Hamburg, Germany, the silly American family, (mine), ordered hamburgers, and we were served steak tartare. 😂😂😂

Occasionally i eat at one those places and just tell them to fix me something good
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@MarineBob They do that without arguing, when you’ve ordered something you don’t know if you like.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
@Primnproper @Primnproper hell, i let them order for me
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@MarineBob 😁
HumanEarth · F
Yes American food is loaded with chemicals where as other countries won't even allow it in their country
SandWitch · 26-30, F
@HumanEarth
Good point you make. Let me offer further support to your point. In Canada and the USA for example, the insecticide DDT was banned from agricultural use over 30 years ago in those two countries.

DDT however, is made in Texas, USA to this day .

That American chemical company in Texas manufactures DDT for countries who don't ban DDT for insect control, countries such as Mexico and Honduras for example.

What this means is, Mexico has been using DDT to control insects in their crops for well over 30 years and when those crops are harvested, those Mexican agricultural crops are being exported to the USA and to Canada and end up on the grocer's shelves in those countries whom had otherwise banned the use of DDT in their own country.

The reason DDT was banned in both Canada and the USA is because it is highly carcinogenic and it stays in the soil for well over 100 years before the chemical even reaches it's half-life, yet Mexico still uses DDT and the USA manufactures it for Mexico.

The USA then allows the harvested Mexican crop back into the US where the DDT was banned for good reason.

Canada also accepts agricultural imports from Mexico despite DDT being banned in Canada, but only banned because DDT stays locked in the soil.

Bottom line is, DO NOT buy agricultural produce from Mexico or Honduras because you're only fooling yourself if you think your government food inspectors say it's okay to eat.
HumanEarth · F
Yes, I am a ginseng famer and very well aware about DDT. Specially in ginseng market
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@HumanEarth very true..

Most of it is interesting. I don't travel, so I don't have the real experience but I always imagined how I would suddenly realize how many things I'd miss from home if I moved elsewhere. Sometimes you come across these things anyway, for example when you look up recipes. I still don't really know what the hell all-purpose flour is. 😆 Or caster sugar and what it is used for. We only have granulated and powdered sugar.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@CrazyMusicLover All purpose flour is Plain flour in the UK as opposed to self raising or bread flour..

Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Jenny1234 i do some..
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@Jenny1234 We are lucky we live in a pretty diverse area.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
@JimboSaturn it’s true!
WandererTony · 56-60, M
Yes I find it interesting. And I love to read and know more about it.

Over the years, the world reduces boundaries and cultures and food habits are now getting all mixed.

But I learnt recently some very interesting facts.

The Portuguese brought potatoes to India. We never had them earlier. And they took black pepper from here and now they are famous for their Peri peri 😀

And there are lots more. Very interesting indeed..!
scorpiolovedeep · 51-55, M
I love food from.other countries.

Lots to learn
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@scorpiolovedeep there is most definitely 👍
Pfuzylogic · M
I made certain to partake in the indigenous foods at the ports I deployed to: Spain, Guam, Philippine Islands, Northern Europe. It added so much more to my travels as a Sailor
Lol….. one of my favorite things to do while traveling in other countries is to visit their supermarkets. 🙂
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@OlderSometimesWiser I’d find that interesting..
@Primnproper Very much so. Makes for some cheap souvenirs and gifts too. 👍
Primnproper · 56-60, F
WillieT · 61-69, M
Yes, some of it. I always like to try out the local cuisine when I travel.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@WillieT thats great
It's kinda interesting to me what various places/people/cultures find repulsive that I consider just fine and vice versa.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@dirge yes it just shows all the diverse tastes we have.
@Primnproper yeah, I tend to like to know what things I like that someone else finds repulsive and why.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@dirge most definitely.👍
ArtieKat · M
I just love food. Full stop! It's my main hobby and it's how I've earned a living for nearly 50 years.
metaldog · 51-55, F
Food is half the fun of travelling 😊
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@metaldog I'm sure it is..👍
SW-User
Snails do not have much taste, they are usually covered in garlic.

Frogs legs taste like chicken.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@SW-User I'd never touch a snail and heard about frogs legs..lol
mindless · M
Food is awesome, do I'm happy to travel and find out
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
Yes! You Brits call French fries' chips; Chips are potato chips in the US. LOL
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@WillaKissing thats right we do
meggie · F
A lot of chinese and indian people came to the UK and opened restaurants which the British love. They modified some of their foods to suit our tastes. But having some of them as friends and eating their traditional foods is a lot different than what they serve in restaurants.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
I find that fascinating and the fact that the United States and the UK basically are two countries divided by a common language.😂
Would you like a biscuit and tea or would you fancy a scone?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
The soul of a nation can be found in what it eats and drinks. Food is the natural starting point of any study into another culture.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
Always, I find everything about how other countries do things interesting.
Oster1 · M
Absolutely! 😊🌺
I find a lot interesting about it. I’m glad I traveled a bit when I was younger and wish I’d done more. 😊
SandWitch · 26-30, F
Yes, for sure! Whenever I travel to the USA on business trips, it always amazes me how fat Americans are compared to anywhere else I travel to in the world. If that isn't a cultural food and menu issue, then I don't know what is.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@SandWitch no I mean I can’t imagine somewhere like LA where they seem more health conscious being so bad.. so I was talking areas not body. Lol
SandWitch · 26-30, F
@Primnproper
Where I travel to in the USA are coastal cities on either the east or west coast of the US. Therefore, my latitude of experienced example lies only where ships, yachts and salt water come into contact with continental USA and Hawaii.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@SandWitch understood..
