you in support of reparation payments?

seems to me just people wanting handouts and using history as a form to get it.
I think its the stupidest thing.
Just watched a Piers Morgan debate or screaming match if you wanna call it that where they were Arguing about the king of Britain having to apologize for slavery and the black women arguing for it could not answer a single question and would just rant on about nonsense and eventually when finally asked what she wants, she said reparations.
So Pierce went on to ask if Roman and Viking ancestors should have to pay him reparations also and she went on about not talking about slavery, so it confused me what the hell she wanted reparations for haha..
anyway its dumb, go get a job and stop trying to get handouts wherever you can as far as i am concerned.

thoughts?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
No. There is no fair way of doing this. The majority of people in the USA are mixed racially. How do you go about sorting that out and also what about the Blacks who’s ancestors immigrated here after the Civil War was over and the Whites who’s ancestors did the same. And what about the Whites who have ancestors who fought in the Civil War for the north? Many of them with terrible injuries and some died leaving offspring.

@MsSwan Their motto was “Win at any cost”. They stink to high heaven.
FUCK NO!

As it happened AGES AGO and the ones moaning, yelling and going on and on about it nowadays do not have anything to do with it and do not know what it was like.. They should not be getting paid.

It is rammed down peoples throats and being pushed on us by again a little margin of people and the sheep/dodo's believe what is being told so they follow the narrative and seem to want others to conform to this stupid way of thinking which happens with other things.

The government and royal families are puppets and most go with the flow/narrative/agenda but if you go against it..again you are made to look like "the bad one"

White people have also been slaves.

And if you think about it..we are born: taught things that they want us to know BUT THE REAL INFO they hide, say it is "misinformation" and even get rid of. Go to school, college, uni and or get a job.
Some people are brainwashed e.g. by looking at news and are just like slaves..doing what they are told to do and 2020/2021 & 2022 showed us that and still happening with other agendas being pushed on us!

And later in life you die. Throughout ur life you are kinda a slave to the government/state 🤷🏼‍♀️ but most do not see that.

@BigGuy2 I hear others preaching their opinion and I do not go ape shit crazy about what they say but they are ones who don't respect mine and other peoples opinion just coz we speak up and or go against the narrative/agenda being preached.

And later try to make us look like bad one and or twist what was said to fit narrative.

No, I don't. The injustices created by slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, & implicit bias are far too deep for a simple cash payment to fix them. If we just gave all living descendants of slaves a cash payment, that money would end up flowing into the hands of businesses, which are predominantly owned by white people, and then the tax revenue would predominantly be invested into white-majority areas.

If we want to actually fix the scars of our past, we need to de-segregate our cities and fund public services at the state or national level. We need to grant black people political representation proportionate to their population size, such as through reforming Senate & House vote allocation and replacing the electoral college with a national popular vote. We need to reform our social services to eliminate welfare ceilings and lift people out of poverty traps, and we need to loosen zoning codes in order to reduce rents, thus allowing lower-income people to keep a greater proportion of their money. We need to make one million little systemic changes to make all organizations in America less biased against racial minorities and give black people truly equal opportunity.

If we did all of that, then the intergenerational wealth loss which occurred as a result of systemic racism would still exist, but in my opinion, eliminating intergenerational wealth altogether should be a policy goal for the US government. Nobody should be considered superior or inferior to anyone else based solely on the parents they were born to. If such a bill to simply pay out cash reparations were introduced today and I were in Congress, I'd vote for it because I'm in favor of transferring wealth from the owning class to the working class, and on average, this would fit the bill. But it's far from the optimal policy, and I hope we can aim higher than just that.
SW-User
@BlueVeins Agreed. Unfortunately all of that takes serious political effort and many people would be opposed to it fundamentally, but it is what would actually make a significant difference. Cash payments are just something politicians support because people like it--why wouldn't they, who doesn't want free money in the mail? But it won't actually achieve anything.
fanuc2013 · 51-55, F
Absolutely no "reparations" that is ridiculous! Slavery was a very bad thing, but it existed for centuries, until finally coming to an end ( except for a few isolated pockets) as people became civilized and compassionate to others. So, we are to be made to feel guilty and monetarily penalized for doing the right thing?
Slade · 56-60, M
@fanuc2013 I for one can never understand why the 'groes complain about being brought from Africa to here. The continent of Africa is a giant piece of shit

Iwillwait · M

@Iwillwait fair enough a rational opinion.

Can anyone even be able to PROVE that they are related to a slave or children of one ???
This happened a long long time ago and it has been abolished and is against the law now. it's over
It's just another way of the African American people trying to get money from the government for ridiculous reasons. What would we be paying reparations for anyway ? The people who would collect were NOT slaves and even if they are the children of or ancestors of one.....paying THEM does not in any way reward or help the slave...they're ALL DEAD for god sake.
The American people have admitted it was wrong but back then it was NOT ! It was legal back then for people and political families to own slaves and the statues that were erected to remember these great American leaders should have never been taken down.
How stupid and idiotic this all is.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Midlifemale I have felt that this is a big distraction from the slavery that is happening today. Immigrants getting work visas sponsored by some companies are being brought here and abused. I don’t know how common it is but the medical marijuana grow centers in Oklahoma have had several incidents in the news. Some of the workers at one place were not being paid. And at another place they were forced to stay on site 24-hours a day, every day of the year (obviously they aren’t going to spend money if they can’t cash a check, open a checking account or go somewhere to shop). Some of them escaped and reported their employers to the police. In both cases the workers and the owners were from China. I have heard of such things happening with domestic workers, garment factories, and other places. Wages not paid or being way underpaid or working too many hours etc. And then we have forced sexual trafficking (kidnapping) which is another type of slavery. Slavery is a huge problem all over the world today and deserves serious discussion and working towards eliminating it.
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti Amen...and I agree. The open borders that the Biden administration is allowing is causing all of this corruption.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Midlifemale many of these people who breach the border will play the system to the hilt or get involved in criminal things. Others will get taken advantage of if they meet up with the wrong people. Some of them will be trafficked. They found an 8-year old girl who had been gang-raped at the border with 57 different DNAs of semen in her. That is horrifying and heartbreaking, how does a child ever recover from that?
I’ve never owned a slave
And ‘they’ have never been one..

Slurp on deez nuts
Payments? Or reparations in general?
Would you say there's nothing outstanding to settle? No need to repair this?

Entitlements can make inequality unimportant. We're not going there, either.

@MsSwan might be surprised at who all of European descent had ancestors that were brought over as indentured servants as children and were never freed from the debts that their families owed. Some of them may have had children during their lifetime and descendants. I met someone who said he had ancestors who were enslaved this way.
specman · 51-55, M
No. It's just people wanting money for free. Just about everybodies ancestors had times of misfortune, but nobody needs to be compensated for the misfortunes their ancestors faced and people that weren't responsible for the misfortune should not have to pay for it. It is coming out of taxpayers money.
Torsten · 36-40, M
@specman exactly
badminton · 61-69, MVIP
Yes, I'm for reparations, but not in the form of cash. Rather, reparations should be in the form of free job training and job placement, free education to the college-university level, free lifetime medical care, including mental health care and drug/alcohol rehab. These services would pay for themselves very soon in reduced crime and social problems. I would gladly pay taxes for that.
Slade · 56-60, M

Thanks for the American history lesson sluggo. I'd a never known that seeing as I only have a degree in it.

Reparations yes - they've never paid us for the voyage to the much better world. I demand that + 160 years compounded interest

@Slade You can vote for the candidates of your choice. I will do the same.

A little personal history: I went to Jr. High School in Oakland CA in the 1970's. I got to know lots of black kids. Guess what - they are different from each other! They are individuals with different personalities and characters. Surprise, surprise, they were human beings. NOT ALL THE SAME!

@Lanie78 its idiotic to claim anyone outside of it is responsible for it. He shouldnt even have to tell people it wont happen again
Lanie78 · 41-45, F
@Torsten I agree. Ridiculous that anyone should think otherwise
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
Reparations are a reasonable thing to ask for in many cases. For example, I don't think that Germany should have just gotten away with whole genocides, making profit off other nations etc without paying back. People are alive today who watched their villages getting looted, their parents executed, couldn't go to school etc and of course no amount of money can soothe this pain but it's a way to make amends and move on. Another example, the modern Turkish nation was built due to the genocides that Atatürk committed, and of course I'm not going as far back to say that Turkey should pay for whatever happened during the Ottoman Empire, but the genocides specifically enabled the creation of the ethnonationalist republic of Turkey.
And it's not limited to those two examples, just look at anyone who can point at their family property/wealth they lost because of imperialism, the language they were forced to forget, the discrimination they still face because of history. These people cannot forget history and in my opinion those who profited off it should not forget it either- and reparations are a way to ensure that they do remember.
Torsten · 36-40, M
@HannibalAteMeOut people alive today who dealt through a horrible injustice, should seek some compensation.
Those who went through nothing and just trying to get money based off others history, deserve nothing
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@Torsten well this is usually done with some kind of proof, I can't just say I want reparations about whatever by whomever. But each case is different. Some people demand reparations directly to them because of what their own family went through, others demand it for their whole community because the effects of injusticies they faced in the past can be shown today and it's a way to bridge that gap in nations that strive to be fair & democratic.
calicuz · 51-55, M

originnone · 61-69, M
@Nitedoc I see the continued ingrained racism within most institutions in the US to be a major problem.
Slade · 56-60, M
@originnone racism - is there anything it can't do? *SIGH*
originnone · 61-69, M
@Slade I'm not sure what you're saying...
JestAJester · 31-35, M
Put it in simpler terms. Would you think its right I should pay money for what my father did to your father 40 years ago, before I was even born? Of course not. Logically the one who did the crime should be the one who pays right? If we must accept the sins of our fathers and our forefathers, so on and so forth then so shall you have to pay for the sins of your ancestors. Doesn't seem fair or practical does it?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
If one can demonstrate measurable loss that is clearly the responsibility of a living person or corporation, then reparations are appropriate. My grandfather was compensated by the German republic for the illegal confiscation of his farm by invading Nazis. General historical grievances do not fall into that category.
Torsten · 36-40, M
@SunshineGirl that sounds fair
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
I think with understanding of generational trauma and wealth disparity in direct relation to history it's very plausible.

Reparations should likely be made in the forms of social investment in assets such as schooling, community work and centres, systemic financial support (increasing the welfare system or wages), and improving the worst affected areas of said history to increase the chances of those who live there to increase generational wealth for their children and improve quality of life overall.

There's many many credible cited papers and thematic analysis on the subject, and the more you understand social psychology and history the more blatant the reality becomes. We're shaped very much by our environment.
SlaveEt · 36-40, F
No. Reparations would need to have been paid to those who actually wore the chains. None of those folks are left so it's a dead issue. America is all about as equal opportunity as possible, not equal outcome. You want money? Earn it!

@Torsten so you don’t think native Americans getting government funding for simply being native Americans isn’t a form of reparation?

I have noticed in other convos you do try to defend your stance on the topic somewhat and here you just seem like trying to do whatever you can to avoid it.
So i ask you again, who makes these cut off rules on reparation payments and who determines who is eligible for them? You claimed cant ask for them when things go as far back 5000 years, so where did you get that from or did you just make that up?

Giving out money, No. at one point everybody had an ancestor that was a slave if you look back enough. The Irish to the British, the Vikings enslaving people from the British isles, the north Africans taking European slaves, the Arabs with Africans, Europeans with the native of the americas and etc. It's sad that the usa doesnt just let it go and move forward in a productive matter. Was slavery horrible, yes. However, it's a statement of survival and not of being victimized. Reparations will just cause further division in a country that is already divided. People will have to pay more in taxes and that's going to cause more resentment. I swear politicians are just using this to further divide the population, so they can have more control. Instead of paying people 5 million each, they should allow tax incentives for business ownership. Black Americans business should not pay taxes for the first few years or so, as long as they invest in their communities. That way, they can actually build up their neighborhoods. instead giving money away that will have less value once they get it.
Torsten · 36-40, M
@empanadas well said. yeah basically most people could come up with a reason why they think they are owed in. Its dumb
MethDozer · M
Mixed opinion on it. Natuve American tribes absolutely deserve more repirations from the US government. No question.

As for slavery reparations it gets a little trickey. If you gave them out to every ancestor of a former slave family, at this stage you would be handing out like $100 a person by time you divied it up equally. Also where does it all come from? On the other hand there are wealthy families to this day who's history of wealth goes back yo their slave owning ancestors and that wealth ahould most certainly be taxed on that and they should be paying what was owed but never given. Same for many State governments that benefited from slavery, and spent decades after emancipation. Fighting to segregate. They should be paying. Should it go to individuals? No I don't think so, but it should be going to support systems and betterment of disenfranchised neighborhoods and communities of blacks that are by and large descendents of slaves and also towards education to squash bullshit revisionist history like the "Lost Cause Myth" , war of Northern Aggresion myth, and the Civil War wasn't about Slavery Myth.
BigGuy2 · 26-30, M
The British Empire - after the Abolition of Slavery Act 1833 - emancipated 'legally' bought Slaves to the tune of £20 MILLION - {which, at the time, was 5% of GDP}

... the loan, it was ONLY paid off in 2014, let's work out what 5% of GDP is today, then ask them to pay that BACK for their emancipation, BEFORE we even think of reparations ...

YES or NO
