What was affordable 30 years ago, that only rich people can now afford?

Musicman · 61-69, M
Gas, groceries, insurance, a house, a vacation.
@Musicman All orchestrated in 1892 in Omaha, Nebraska.

@NativePortlander1970 report said you need to make more money to buy a new vehicle than a house because vehicles depreciate and need to be replaced
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@Musicman Add the frequency of having to pay for gas for those, like if you regularly drive in rush hour traffic for work.
Pretty much everything. Unless you are rich or on public assistance you are screwed, the middle and working classes are being squeezed to the max.
Major sporting events and concerts.

Oh yeah red meat….chuck roast with veggies was something we had once a month, ground beef was a frugal meat for a meal, chuck steaks were inexpensive to cook with. A big pot of chili was affordable back then and could use leftovers with rice or dip etc. The price of beef is getting so expensive that even buffets are limiting how much they put out. Went to the casino buffet last week and they only put out a small amount at a time and said that’s all there was so people wouldn’t hog it. I didn’t see any other red meat meals, it was pork, chicken, turkey and cheap fish. They used to serve grilled steaks and prime rib pretty often and large portions at that.

Here? I can't think of anything, honestly. Far more people can afford now what they couldn't 20-30 years ago.

One-worker households (in the 60’s especially) with several children and having a vacation cabin on a lake. I knew families like this. Father worked, mom stayed at home. People didn’t get theirselves in credit hell back then either. They dined in restaurants very rarely then when the wives were home to cook those meals, didn’t need to pay for a babysitter or have two vehicles, etc.

Ever read Lolita? The only obscene thing in that book was the way anyone could do anything when it came to shelling it out, so why do certain people choose to **** up?

Heating, holidays

@HotPizza71 I remember how holidays once meant going camping to the woods, packing homemade foods or going to cheap hostels, now it seems like almost everyone can buy a vacation by the sea, taking a plane, staying in a hotel with breakfast and dinner, tourist resorts and attractions are packed, it's no longer the relax and some kind of luxury but almost like the basic right for everyone where you have to fight to catch the ticket, come early to be able to get somewhere at all, then squeeze through crowds.. In Europe, it doesn't seem like people can't afford vacations at all. Everything is insanely overcrowded and all those people don't really look rich.

@NativePortlander1970 Late 80’s I could buy $15-25 worth of groceries and cook with them and it was plenty. I didn’t buy much as far as junk food or soft drinks, cooked from scratch. When I was working at Walmart 13 years ago customers would leave the store after complaining that they paid about $300 for their cart full of groceries, now well over $400 I’m sure. I go to Aldis & Winco for most grocery purchases now. Even when I was working at Walmart I thought the prices were too high for anything processed and the produce & meat too. We had some competitive local chain stores that were good options back then. It was a Walmart customer that told me she was buying her groceries at Aldi in a nearby city. I started driving over there after I quit Walmart. Not much further than driving to the west part of my city to shop.

@NativePortlander1970 @cherokeepatti I'm single with no kids. I should be able to save some money when it comes to shopping for myself, but nope.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SubstantialKick It’s really hard for blue collar working families with children. They may not qualify for food stamps and have to limit what they buy to the money they have to spend…unless they want to use credit cards and get themselves in debt that way.
