Satanic Panic

The Satanic Panic of the 1980s and 1990s saw a wave of moral panic in the United States, created and spread by conservatives and christians.
The panic itself was based on the belief that Satanic cults were infiltrating the country, engaging in ritual sacrifice, and recruiting children and teenagers into their ranks. The fear and paranoia caused by this movement was so intense that it resulted in a number of wrongful convictions and prosecutions, as well as public hysteria and the formation of (often) ineffective legislative or public policy responses.

Although the original Satanic Panic has largely died down, many of the dangers associated with it still exist today. Not only do right wing extremist views continue to be spread, but much of the fear and misunderstanding of certain religious or cultural beliefs can still cause their adherents to be labeled as “Satanists” or somehow morally questionable. In the last couple of years the "satanist" label has been replaced with the accusation of being a "groomer".

Ultimately, the dangers posed by the original Satanic Panic still exist today in new ways, and it is more important than ever to guard against fear-based decision-making which promotes intolerance and prejudice.
Yep. Kind of like the right wing militia - white supremacist - skin head panic perpetrated by liberals and atheists.

@Gloomy when you say patriarchal you lose any credibility. Anywhere Christianity spread women became free like America. You're so free and you are blind to it
Gloomy · F
@Brasceo The suffragette movement and political and social changes freed women not christianity. In fundamentalist homes domestic violence is still common and it was so in the US for a while.

Your nationalism makes you lose credibility
Brasceo · 41-45, M
@Gloomy nationalism another word made up in the last few decades which means absolutely nothing. Christinany is what made this a free country to allow any group to form.
it aint really a party until ya sacrifice a couple of virgins and drink a few cups of blood.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@YourMomsSecretCrush Are you at least a good enough host to blast some Slayer when you throw those parties?
@CestManan Im more of an Iron Maiden guy. LOL
CestManan · 46-50, F
@YourMomsSecretCrush so from the stereo comes, whoa to you of Earth and sea. For the devil sends the Beast with Wrath...

I remember it well. It began in the 80s but believe me, it was still alive and well in my little Bible Belt town in the 90s when I was a teen. I was goth and I was accused of being a witch, a satan worshiper, and was constantly asked if I sacrificed animals and drank blood. 🙄

and was constantly asked if I sacrificed animals and drank blood
You should have scoffed and been like, "Oh come on, doesn't everybody?"
Carl Sagan talks about something similar in The Demon Haunted World. How Demon Possession morphed into Alien Abduction stories. It's easy to make the myth of the day into a scape goat to gain power for your group. Salem Witch Trials made a lot of men rich by stealing land from the "witches"
I grew up a few miles from the McMartin Preschool, which was the focus of the most expensive criminal prosecution in US history, spanning over 7 years. Allegations began with sexual abuse, and eventually devolved into stories of children helicoptered to the desert to participate in satanic rituals (and returned in time for their parents to pick them up), and witnessing ceremonies in the nonexistent "tunnels" beneath the school involving Chuck Norris and other celebrities ritually sacrificing giraffes and rhinos. The defendants were eventually acquitted, and the resulting blowback led to restrictions on how the police and social workers could question children in these cases.

Thanks for the post. I remembered when I told my Christian stepfather I'm not Christian and I considered myself spiritual which means being connected to Nature and the energy of the universe, he accused me of being a devil worshipper. The devil has become a Boogeyman to them when the god of their bible killed more people and animals than the devil that's in it.

They're afraid that their religion is decreasing in America and that America is becoming more Secular and spiritual and less religious.
Brasceo · 41-45, M
@Peaceandnamaste every century has said the same thing 😉 the Lord is still walking as king through the ages

@Peaceandnamaste Nothing worse than being told you are not a Christian.

I’ve been told I go to church for the wrong reasons.

That I should go to another church.

That I am a troubled spirit.

I remember when my mom got angry at me because I received a Nintendo Power magazine in the mail that had Pokémon on the cover and she thought Pokémon was evil 🙄

@LordShadowfire
summoning demons".

People freak out about that and seances etc but that sh*t has no more effect than when people pray or call upon God. OR when Benny Hinn waves his hands and crowds of people fall. He be swinging around his coat and the entire conjugation or congregation or whatever holy crowds of people are called, anyways they be falling backwards, man I am going to hire Benny Hinn then to get rid of the leaves in my yard if he can do all that.
Gloomy · F
@CestManan Faith based institutions are very successful at this, targeting people at very low points in their lives. The Catholic Church sucks their members dry for example.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Gloomy I think the preachers and televangelists who target people at low points are working for a "lower" power if you know what I mean.
Brasceo · 41-45, M
@CestManan yes they prey on weak and vulnerable for sure read scripture they were already doing it then
Brasceo · 41-45, M
Satanist are miserable misinformed brainwashed people
Peaceandnamaste · 26-30, F
@Brasceo Aren't Christians the most miserable and brainwashed? The nicest people I've encountered are Witches, wiccans, atheists, pagans, even satanists both theistic and atheistic, also most satanists don't believe in a literal Satan but as an archetype. The only people judged me were Christians.
Brasceo · 41-45, M

“Backward masking “ in lyrics etc
Brasceo · 41-45, M
@SW-User that's foolish only God can be everywhere
SW-User
@Brasceo they are one and the same….don’t be foolish
Some very famous ppl openly worshiped Satan.. Christopher lee for eg..
seen a Hollywood spirit cooking party?
That’s some weird freaky shit..
Point being.. there are groups out there..

Thanks for posting this ...

Something that was completely glossed over by me, and I will definitely pay closer attention , thanks to your insight ..

My only vantage point of this might have been the from the ridiculous classification by ultra conservatives of satanism in rock music and zappa's battle against censorship , specifically with Nancy Regan abd ger gang ...trying to demonize an art form and associate with atrocities .. Pure and utter BS ....
Convivial · 26-30, F
Salem and conservative morals never ever went away...
Brasceo · 41-45, M
@Convivial they aren't even the same thingd
Convivial · 26-30, F
@Brasceo in the case of Salem it was about people not following the correct path, that path being strictly conservative
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
It spread to the UK and its influence unfortunately was not restricted to the religious right. It gained influence among academics and corrupted the culture of schools and childrens services in a number of local authorities. Many parents were forcibly separated from their children and wrongfully given criminal convictions.
originnone · 61-69, M
IDK...somehow defending people who worship satan seems a big over the top.
Gloomy · F
@Brasceo Neither is real grow up dude
Brasceo · 41-45, M
@Gloomy sorry I won't take your word on that grow up
Disgustedman · 61-69, M
@Gloomy well that's fine if you don't believe either exists. The thing is is that it's not our job to convince you. It is God's job and if he doesn't do that, then there's a chance that you could be an Esau. And God hated him before he even was born so it kind of shows you know he was not liked.. as God says "I will have mercy on who I have mercy I will have compassion on who I have compassion"
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
My best friend's mom was caught up in that, long after everybody else started coming to their senses. She wouldn't let us play D&D in her house because "that game involves summoning demons".
