Why wont they use the litterbox

I have 5 cats. One female and two males and two male kittens 3 months. My female has had two litters of kittens, both litters have refuse to use the litterbox.. they will go beside the boxes but thats about it.. i have changed litter, gotten new boxes, move them around (had to move one back cause mom is blind and couldn't find it) but they will not use it. What do i do?

You go in there for a few days to show them how it works. See if that works and report back. 🤭

Cats are smell oriented. They know it's not their box. So you are violating their first primal instinct by having only one box.

Heck my cat doesn't even want other cats in the house. That's violating their instinct.

Every time another cat has come into the house and leaves she smells where they were.

They rub against things to mark their territory. They do the same with people. Your cats believe they own you.

Try getting more than one litter box?
Put 6 boxes around the house. The rule of thumb is to have one more box than cats. Also, experiment with kinds of litter. They may dislike the texture.

@Snowvixen this would of been my guess too... or they simply haven't picked up on that need need to be in the box while doing it...
@Viper Based on my experience kittens pick up on it quickly. But they also are very particular about how they want things. Lol it's never your house again as long as you have cats.

Well my cat is like that, just does so the litter box when he feels like it and most of the time he does it on the floor. It's very random for him.

How many boxes do you have? You need at least one per cat in the house but we have 2 extras, just in case.
Wizkid22 · 41-45, M
@SwampFlower 6 boxes one in every room

Some cats won’t share litter boxes with other cats. I had one like that, used one just fine that the other cat didn’t use. Brought a third cat in the house and he stopped using it.

But the kittens are the only ones who won't use the litterboxes.. have never had this problem before and have had many cats that had kittens and the kitten would use the litter box
My cat is 2 years old - and he still needs to be placed in the litter tray.

He will use it once he is there, but he doesn't always seek them out to use them...
Put the cat in the litter box and demonstrate how to use the litter box with their paws. You may want to look into buying training pads.
I'd find new homes for at least 3 of them and get new boxes for the two you keep.

@Spoiledbrat i am.. was just wondering why only the kittens wouldn't use the box..i mean with the 2nd litter mom kept putting them in one of the litter boxes at 5 weeks

Perhaps you ought consider having the female cat spayed, and the males neutered.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
Put them outside. I have had a cat that refuse to use a litter box
