ATM, I'm much more worried about US tech companies shaping European discourse. MAGA is working in lockstep with Silicon Valley and they have a shared interest in weakening Europe. MAGA wants to do it for geopolitical reasons and the tech CEOs want to reduce regulation.

Musk's recent interventions into UK politics show the way that this is going.

@Burnley123 That's a valid fear, maga is a cult sickness. There's a good show called American horror story, the season is cult that touches on Trump fanatics so it is a valid worry to have.

What's striking is that the people before they were maga, some were even atheists. I've been paying attention to things like this girl's dad was overtaken with maga and he started out as an atheist before and then accused her of being a communist.

So it's def something there

What concerns me the most about TikTok is how quickly it rose in popularity, and how addictive it is, and how it's now bowing to Trump too (see the message in the shutdown popup)

Twitter and Meta both took pretty much a couple of decades to become as popular as they're now, during which there weren't big platforms to compete against. They're big because they were the first to come, and people are lazy to try out alternatives basically (plus when they do most people they know don't, so the remain anchored to the first platform). TikTok is unique in nor only how quickly it rose but also in how it remained relevant in spite of the duopoly of the other two. Lastly if they banned FB people would probably celebrate, this outrage we're seeing about TikTok I'm not sure could've been replicated even if they banned X. Neither are anywhere as addictive.

@Ema83748201 Nah tik Tok is only crazy if you're a crazy person who looks up crazy things. Most of mine were recipe and pet videos, also saw a lot of positive stuff. And there's one issue voters everywhere, they vote based on only one issue and nothing else

@Rolexeo Yeah I know that parents feel alienated sometimes because it's a different time for them and it's a means of connecting with the world so I get why you would feel bad.

@SatanBurger i've talked about it a million times already SORRY but it's not about data. android and iphones can't even securely text eachother. your phone listens to passive conversations and advertises to you based on them. if you use apple you just got an update where ai tracks everything you do to see how you use your phone. same with windows (i think?).

This isn't properly a ban (the country preventing you to use a website), but a shutdown (the website itself blocking a nation)

@MrBrownstone we're talking about how to access tiktok and if we can on VPNs or not. And I said VPN messed with my connection. I mentioned hackers cos it made me wonder if the computer company put a shadow program in to counteract vpns and mess it up

@Bang5luts Well see my issue is, I've never seen so called Chinese propaganda on tiktok. I've seen cat videos, recipes, stupid memes but nothing even remotely pro China.

So it's like they want to make the case of propaganda but I've never even seen anything close to it. It kinda sounds like a case of what is that word when you're scared of foreigners?

I do get that China does propaganda and stuff like that so I'm not sticking up for them, I've been a long criticizer of China's treatment of Tibetan Buddhism and other groups. I know their history full well but it's an issue if you're making up things for future events that never happened as a reason to outright ban something.

What happens if citizens use Facebook to criticize our government, will they ban that next?

It leaves a sour taste in the mouth.
