Ngl I'm kinda annoyed the Tok is banned

I had so many recipes saved it's not even funny, I made a few recipes that were pretty decent. All because they're so concerned that the Chinese can sell what prn you watch so they can give you propaganda or something. I wasn't entirely clear since we're also bombarded with propaganda from like everything and everyone already but whatever America *rolls eyes*

I think it's more that both your major parties want to remove a competitor for their donors.

@Burnley123 It's exactly that, but nonetheless it remains a security concern (not much for the privacy aspect, but because it allows a foreign govt. to shape public discourse)

The unspoken problem is that X, FB, YT and the others are one too, especially for us in Europe.

@Elessar Yes, it is a front in cyberwarfare and everyone is in on it.

ATM, I'm much more worried about US tech companies shaping European discourse. MAGA is working in lockstep with Silicon Valley and they have a shared interest in weakening Europe. MAGA wants to do it for geopolitical reasons and the tech CEOs want to reduce regulation.

Musk's recent interventions into UK politics show the way that this is going.

@Burnley123 That's a valid fear, maga is a cult sickness. There's a good show called American horror story, the season is cult that touches on Trump fanatics so it is a valid worry to have.

What's striking is that the people before they were maga, some were even atheists. I've been paying attention to things like this girl's dad was overtaken with maga and he started out as an atheist before and then accused her of being a communist.

So it's def something there

@Burnley123 I'm equally worried about both. Look at Romania, that was mostly if not uniquely TikTok's effort

What concerns me the most about TikTok is how quickly it rose in popularity, and how addictive it is, and how it's now bowing to Trump too (see the message in the shutdown popup)

Twitter and Meta both took pretty much a couple of decades to become as popular as they're now, during which there weren't big platforms to compete against. They're big because they were the first to come, and people are lazy to try out alternatives basically (plus when they do most people they know don't, so the remain anchored to the first platform). TikTok is unique in nor only how quickly it rose but also in how it remained relevant in spite of the duopoly of the other two. Lastly if they banned FB people would probably celebrate, this outrage we're seeing about TikTok I'm not sure could've been replicated even if they banned X. Neither are anywhere as addictive.
