I've read it was shut down partly because it was used to facilitate a murder
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@caPnAhab Evidently there was a murder that involved EP because the killer and victim met online there, and then met in person. I don;t remember the details any moire, though.

@caPnAhab like StalkerBook
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
@caPnAhab that's what I heard too

I can't find the details, but two users who met through the site ended up with one of them murdering the other. The founders' statement for shutting it down after this said that they were concerned about being able to protect users' privacy, and since the site was intended to be anonymous, their only option was to close it.

I only found EP a few months before it closed. From what people told me, it had significantly deteriorated since its apex; even the UI wasn't as good. The site was begun by Armen Berjikly as a way for people with cerebral palsy (I think - it could have been a different condition) to share their experiences anonymously, but it quickly morphed into experiences of all kinds being shared.

Before it shut down, users made several suggestions for substitutes, including Relatetothat (also shut down, although it was heavily moderated), Vent (short form, more like Twitter), and a few others I don't remember. SW is the closest to it.
Anyone interested in the EP murder story it’s portrayed on a show called Web of Lies, Season 6, Episode 3. The name of the episode is called “The Devil’s Pact.”

@OlderSometimesWiser

It's on DailyMotion

More than 100 murders have been linked to Craigslist yet Craiglist has never shut down because of what some of its users have done

Facebook has also been involved in homicides

Websites are rarely held responsible for any bad thing some of their users might do

Which is why I don't understand why the whole EP-shut-down-due-to-a-murder narrative periodically resurfaces and keeps getting so much traction akin to urban legends
helenS · 36-40, F
@BlueGreenGrey What I don't understand is why "Experience Project" reappears again and again. It's a dead site, like so many others.
SimilarWorlds, on the other side, is a fantastic platform, and very healthy, as far as I can see.
@helenS It is because people have fond memories of it, probably due to the freedom it provided. Remember the old Yahoo Chats where you could create your own rooms? That was a lot of fun, but the religious virgins shut the fun down.
helenS · 36-40, F
@JamesBugman Oh yes – group chat rooms, now that would be something for SW too! 👍🏼
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
It was bought out and shut down, from what I heard at the time. Whoever created it took the money and ran, I guess. There was even talk the film director Peter Jackson had something to do with buying it and had plans for "cleaning it up" or whatever.

Iwillwait · M
🙄 Who cares?
meJess · F
It experienced some issues
Dallas7 · 22-25, F
After the muder , they closed it because they didnt want to all their users personal data to get leeked ,they had the choice between that or closing.
@Dallas7 I could see that. The site correspondence between the victim and her killer were subpoenaed.
Tumbleweed · F
I've heard several reasons, murder being one of them
Trickrainbow · 31-35, F
@Tumbleweed who was it they tried to murder?
Tumbleweed · F
@Trickrainbow No, it wasn't like that. It was two users, one wanted to die so she met up with this guy and he carried out her wishes. I can't remember their names.
helenS · 36-40, F

That's what happened...
WandererTony · 56-60, M
@helenS And you and I bailed out (teleported) to the Mother Ship? 🌷
helenS · 36-40, F
Greyjedi · M
I heard a scary story that people used it to commit murder/suicide so they shut it down.
Prettybratbi1tch · 26-30, F
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
It is on Wikipedia i think.
@Subsumedpat The EP wiki article has been deleted.
One of the issues was the US government trying to subpoena records from EP. So, instead of complying with the US government, they decided the safest option for them was to shut the site down.
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
After 9 years, not much?
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
It cocooned and re-emerged as SW
I guess the guy that ran it stopped doing that.
YoMomma · 41-45
It got out of hand and they closed it
Not a lot... it's been dead for 10 years now.
