Nina's Blog - Wednesday 25th February 2026

A grey and cloudy day today, around about 0 C. Some snowfall and a southerly breeze. A comfortable temperature but much higher humidity than yesterday. Even though it wasn't snowing or raining when I was out walking my coat was quite damp by the time I got back.

That looks much like our river here as the barge traffic has broken up much of the ice. We’re at 9C presently so our early morning snow has melted. Once again you do post fantastic pictures. Thanks!

@SageWanderer Thank you! I think it has become much easier to take good pictures now that almost every mobile has a good camera and that storage space is so cheap. I can take a dozen pictures without worrying about the cost of development and without having to delete anything to make space for storing them. Then I can pick the best one.

The ice you see here is mostly ice from the inner fjord that floated out on the other tide. The outer fjord doesn't freeze except in exceptionally cold winters but the inner and outer parts are divided by a sound that is only 180 m wide and the inner part is wider than the outer. The salinity is lower because it is fed by river so it freezes sooner and the narrowness of the sound means that the tidal range is smaller there so the ice doesn't break up so easily.

The tide was running in at about a metre per second close to the edge, presumably faster in the middle. When it's running out it can reach 2.5 m/s (5 knots). It's not a good idea to try to fight against it if you fall in and people have died in the attempt after falling in.

@WillaKissing I had the impression your were an outdoor person and you look pretty fit (in both senses of the word) so I'm pretty sure you'd be fine; perhaps best to leave the heels behind though :-)

@ninalanyon Yes, thank you I am, and exactly yes, it is the heels left behind that shivers me Bones! LOL
