I found this thing in my parent's basement 🙃

I'm pretty damn sure it is older than me. It existed as far as I could remember and even as a small kid I can't recall if it was ever used. It was more like out of date. I think there are missing parts but I'm not very certain, lol

It’s a turntable used for playing vinyl records - my Dad still uses his regularly 🙂🐼🥢
@Dlrannie as do I.
SW-User
That's awesome @Dlrannie
OldBrit · 61-69, M
I still use my hi fi from the early 80s
SW-User
Wow that's impressive @OldBrit
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@SW-User stuff was made to last back then
ArishMell · 70-79, M
Come on - that record-player is modern and looks a costly piece of kit! The digital display gives that away - but I see the cartridge holding the stylus is missing.

Not only are turntables for vinyl records still made, but so are vinyl records.

(A lot of music is also still published on CDs.)

The brown case looks as if for tape-cassettes.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@SW-User LOL! No. At least I don't think so.

They probably haven't the energy to glide through all my clutter!

My first home of my own was older still, built in 1850; the local church dates from the 14C, I think.
SW-User
They could help you sort out the clutter 😅 lol

What cool old features does your house have that new houses don't? @ArishMell
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@SW-User :-)

Well, they have cool draughts... Otherwise, individuality. Too many houses now are all identical.
spjennifer · 56-60, T
Looks like the all in one with stand stuff Sansui used to sell in the mid 1980's, it's missing the amplifier, tuner and cassette deck and that turntable is missing the cartridge with the needle though looks like there's a speaker to the left of the stand. Probably not worth much today as it was fairly cheap even when new. The case below it would have been for cassette tapes and below that was space for vinyl records standing upright.
SW-User
You sound like an expert bc it's indeed a Sansui model and the time frame you mention seems accurate and yes that's a speaker and cassette case. All correct ✅
@spjennifer
spjennifer · 56-60, T
@SW-User Not really an expert but I owned a similar one in the 1980's. Sansui sold that whole system with the stand for around $1,000 but they also had some very high quality components like receivers that sold for more.
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
It's probably from the 80s/early 90s. The suitcase underneath looks more older than the record player itself.
SW-User
🤣 dunno about the suitcase
It has cassettes in it @Barefooter25
GainerDrew · 26-30, M
They don’t make ‘em like that anymore!
Wol62 · 51-55, M
@GainerDrew Now that is old and solid.
SW-User
Is that a good thing?😅 @GainerDrew
GainerDrew · 26-30, M
@SW-User maybe it’s worth some money!
SW-User
It does have a tiny LCD screen, so i'm guessing late 80s/ early 90s .. could be wrong
SW-User
Not early 90s. I was born in 89 @SW-User
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
Hilarious!!😂👍 it’s one of Sansui’s lower grade models direct drive (no belt), crude digital speed control. Interesting, likely mid 1980s I’d guess due to the crude speed control. Where the wooden box is would have likely been a stereo receiver and possibly a cassette deck.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
It’s still adorable!! Anyway, with it's direct drive motor it’s possible that circuit and motor are either noisy, unstable or both. However, it’s also possible there’s nothing wrong with it. I’d try turning it on to see before investing in a phono cartridge and mount for it. It could still be functional and anyway it’s cute 😊 @SW-User
GeniUs · 56-60, M
@BackyardShaman are yes Sansui would've been in their infancy (certainly in the west then). However I believe direct drive was better than belt driven.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
@GeniUs the preference for drive types is debated, and of course a matter of personal choice. Personally I have always preferred belt drive turntables for the stability and isolation they offer from the motor itself. The strobe speed control models allowed precise speed adjustments, as well as looking cool while tripping late at night listening to the Moody Blues😂
[c=359E00]is that thing still functioning?[/c]
SW-User
3% possibility 😝@YukikoAmagi
@SW-User [c=359E00]at least it's not 0% 😏[/c]
Depending on the make and model, and what Amp/speakers you put with it; these retro stereo sets can really sound good.

@stereoguy is a good expert to ask.

It looks kinda similar. This one is Sansui GX-S500
ABCDEF7 · M
Seems like gramophone player. Did you tried to play it with the records?
SW-User
Cassettes @ABCDEF7
ABCDEF7 · M
@SW-User The needle/pin also seems to be missing. Does it revolve when started?
SW-User
I haven't tried to start it @ABCDEF7
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
Does it have a needle on it. It should be resting on its cradle
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
@SW-User sometimes, spare needles are kept of to the side of the record player. They wear out if not taken care of
SW-User
@ronisme1 If I remember well where the briefcase is I think there was something that looked like a big black recorder with many bottoms and knobs but I could be totally wrong.
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
@SW-User probably the stereo. This turntable plays 2 speeds. 33 and 45. Not sure about 78 speed. None of mine had a digital readout
eyeno · M
Yes...., I've had a few, its called a Turntable for playing vinyl records. At the time very high-tech and very close to reproducing the original music as it was meant to be heard.
OnePatheticClown · 51-55, M
Looks early 80's
Probably the rubber bands inside the spinning mechanism need replacement...which is a real pain...
Still nice find!
SW-User
It looks like it's still in a good condition if you ask me! @OnePatheticClown
Degbeme · 70-79, M
The rubber mat on the turntables is missing and so is the stylist head. I`ll bet it still works. Oh and I`m sure it is older than you.
SW-User
Spoken like a pro 👍🏽@Degbeme
It needs a stylus...
Does it work?
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
@SW-User a needle
SW-User
@ronisme1 That black thing that looks like a gun on top is not it?
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
@SW-User its on the very bottom at the end. The needle sits on the vinyl record while it spins and is pointy sharp
Northwest · M
This turntable seems to be missing a few parts.
SW-User
@Northwest Aha. I have a vague memory from a very long time that my brother tried to play something on it once but it didn't work so I think it has been damaged for real. I don't remember hearing any music coming from that thing in my lifetime 😛
Northwest · M
@SW-User You may want to sell it to a movie production company, or decorator to use as antique, unless you're an aspiring decorator.

Otherwise, it has absolutely no value.

My mom has a smaller one, but I've seen similar in my life time 🧐
SW-User
We're the same age so that's normal but I don't recall it being used ever @scooogy
scooogy · 31-35, MVIP
@SW-User oh, the memories of "you must not stomp around the record player, you're ruining the disk" 🤣
Theandyb · 36-40, M
It’s missing a cartridge,stylus,needle.Oh and some 33s or 45s
SW-User
You know a lot about vintage stuff it seems 😃 @Theandyb
Theandyb · 36-40, M
@SW-User I have DJ turntables at home and I grew up listening to my dads records
SW-User
What is the brand name in the blue label?

@SW-User that’s what I thought! They produced a good product while they were in business.
Rpfun78 · 61-69, M
use mine all the time I would never made it to the basement
Ducky · 31-35, F
Ooo, vintage!! 🤩 Get some records for that shit.
Classified · M
Have you tried it?
SW-User
No I don't have any records 😕 @Classified
Classified · M
@SW-User And it is not a good idea to buy a record for an installation that might not work. 😕
Neoerectus · M
Missing the head that houses the needle for playing the vinyl for one. Also appears to be missing the rubber pad for the record to be on rather than bare metal of the turn table.
@SW-User Reel, for Reel to Reel machine.

https://miyatasystem.net/en/publics/index/22/

Likely has music on it, but some can be used to store data for giant computers. Like a big floppy disk.
SW-User
@SethGreene531 Aha makes sense. Thanks!
@SW-User You're welcome !
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
Aww do you also have the vinyls?
SW-User
Can't find any 😅 @HannibalAteMeOut
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
That’s a keeper!!
SW-User
Yeah. Even though it's just sitting there doing nothing, I'll fight for it to stay with us forever :) @Quimliqer
AngelKrish · 26-30, M
Still looks in good condition
Wol62 · 51-55, M
SW-User
@Wol62 I highly doubt it is still functional 😂
Wol62 · 51-55, M
@SW-User Ha ha I broke my parents one by pushing my stepbrother onto it years he, landed right on top of it sitting down!
Joshua19842022 · 36-40, M
Yeah might b older than me 😜
SW-User
A record player?
SW-User
I guess so @SW-User
Eclipsed · M
Yeah but it has sn auto return
SW-User
Oh my goodness.. ..Do you have any idea what you have just discovered?
SW-User
A treasure @SW-User
SW-User
@SW-User I'll take it off your hands for 100 USD
A turntable ! I have one.
