I found this thing in my parent's basement 馃檭

I'm pretty damn sure it is older than me. It existed as far as I could remember and even as a small kid I can't recall if it was ever used. It was more like out of date. I think there are missing parts but I'm not very certain, lol

Come on - that record-player is modern and looks a costly piece of kit! The digital display gives that away - but I see the cartridge holding the stylus is missing.

Not only are turntables for vinyl records still made, but so are vinyl records.

(A lot of music is also still published on CDs.)

The brown case looks as if for tape-cassettes.

I asked mom but she doesn't remember exactly when dad bought it. He is gone. She says it was likely the late 80s. Looked up the model online (Sansui GX-S500) and found something similar from 1985-88.

I was born in 1989 so that sounds about right. It isn't exactly "modern" lol. Yup that case has casettes in it 馃憤馃徑

@SW-User Modern enough! It still looks right up-to-date and if it still works as it should, fully, there is nothing wrong with it.

I own some workshop equipment and tools from the 1950s, one piece probably 100 years old, still perfectly serviceable for their intended purposes.

I think that cassettes have made a bit of a comeback, but to what extent I don't know. They do tend to have a rather limited life by their nature.

It's mainly the IT trade that makes everything to have as short a life-span as possible, for money; and one might question the environmental implications, even though most of the materials in the physical equipment are salvageable.

In 2022 I would say it qualifies as an antique. Maybe it will still be functional as you say if we can replace the missing parts + know how to set them up but I doubt if that's any feasible after third a century. I'm not even sure if another turntable of the same exact model is still around, like anywhere in the world, besides ours 馃槢@ArishMell

@SW-User Think function and condition, not fashion. Anyway an "antique" proper is defined as over 100 years old, not merely 30 years.

Worth investigating though,, because vinyl records are still being made after a huge dip for a few decades; and of course a lot of people have large record collections. If you have its instruction-manual it should specify the stylus, though if that or an equivalent is not available then the whole thing is not much use.

Well, 100 years for a house, 50 for furniture and 25 for electronics 馃槆
I wish I could find the manual. May search for it when I go there in the weekend. It might not be of any use but we will keep it for its sentimental value. Sorta like, in memory of dad. @ArishMell

@SW-User My house is about 100 years old! Needs quite of work doing on it though.

So cool. No ghosts living with ya? 馃懟@ArishMell
ArishMell70-79, M
@SW-User LOL! No. At least I don't think so.

They probably haven't the energy to glide through all my clutter!

My first home of my own was older still, built in 1850; the local church dates from the 14C, I think.
SW-User
They could help you sort out the clutter 馃槄 lol

What cool old features does your house have that new houses don't? @ArishMell
ArishMell70-79, M
@SW-User :-)

Well, they have cool draughts... Otherwise, individuality. Too many houses now are all identical.
