Amazon is having a nervous breakdown. They missed a delivery to me by a day. The auto message on the tracking page was "if you don't get it by Thursday, come back, and we'll help you out."

I don't get what the message really means... Weird. But I suggest you to just wait for a couple of days, and then act, later.
Once I had a pack delivered (on the website) when it wasn't delivered at all, but the guy at the postal service just saved it as delivered on his device, I suppose. I had the pack the day after, but at the beginning I was like "what?".

That sounds a little back handed.

I would say whoever wrote that needs some English lessons ... What penalties does their guaranteed 2 day delivery incur if they don't deliver?
