Body shaming is not more egregious than modesty shaming

People are allowed to not want to see your body revealed to the world, for as much as you are allowed to be proud of it.

What prompted this was seeing an Instagram pile on over a couple of women saying that they don't particularly enjoy seeing fully naked women in the gym changing rooms. They didn't say that it should be banned and they didn't shame any bodies. They just preferred the more modest approach. They were savaged in the comments for daring to oppress full on vagene displays.

While I can respect all points of view and do my best to accommodate peoples feelings, I do find it ironic that they chose to use Instagram to advertise their preference for modesty!

Not every act is a public display. I traditionally use changing rooms to wash and maintain my personal hygiene.
@SunshineGirl It was just a general conversation about things rather than a specific attack on a given theme. A range of topics can be discussed in such a scenario and I feel that people are entitled to dislike nudity in any context. It just becomes a question of how reasonable that is.

@SunshineGirl

I personally find it creepy especially if they are doing this with seriousness instead of a joke, considering how often I use changing rooms. In healthcare there is not always the ability to stay modest in the changing room. They have to be staring at people.

Also since when is modesty related to changing rooms or bathrooms???

Not even in Islam, one of the most hardcore religions about modesty, are these spaces policed.

@Miram That last sentence is an excellent point.

Damn straight. I get the point you are making for sure.

In today's world, especially on-line, I see this prevalent attitude of 'if I expose myself and force it on others, let it all hang out, everyone is supposed to like it and if you speak against it, you are labeled.' Complete opposite of what it should be. No decorum or manners at all, just cringe. Of course I realize changing rooms are a different scenario.

If they didn't want to see it then they shouldn't have looked 🙄 i’m glad i don't go there 😅

I like modesty .. i think a lot of modern trends are trashy 😬

Anyway they don't have to look at other naked ladies . I never did when i was in prison and we all had to strip naked and bend over and cough for the guards in a room of 20 people half of whom where also stripped completely naked 😏 the only way i could mentally keep my own dignity was not look at any of them out of resect. 🤐

They're both weird policing but in this context it sounds confusing given the whole point of a changing room is to undress and dress?
@basilfawlty89 not even magic undergarments could save you from the act of soaking
@cherokeepatti I see where you're coming from. I feel like there should be some regard for others especially with children

@HijabaDabbaDoo I went swimming there some years later and the college students were still doing that. I heard male janitors say that they were sent over to the pool to clean when the one that worked there called in sick. Before they entered the women’s area to empty the trash and check toilets etc. they would yell to warn that they were coming in to clean to warn women to cover up. And there was usually one walking around butt naked saying that she didn’t mind him being in there working while she was there. He would turn around quickly and say that he would come back when the area was vacant. Didn’t want to get falsely accused of something.

I don't understand this. Are they expecting women to not change in the changing room? What modest approach?

@ostfuidctyvm

So now I can't go to my work changing room without thinking of some pick me nut whining on social media about how naked I was to appear modest.

Modesty in changing rooms is an insane expectation

This is the only part I agree with

seeing an Instagram pile

Piling against them was as unfair as their nonsense if not worse. There are more important things to address than who saw whose vajayjay in washing room.
@Miram My main point, perhaps with not the best example used, is that I believe it's perfectly ok to not be ok with bodies. As long as nobody is being oppressed, belittled or insulted in any way then it's a basic expression of freedom.

Well I do, tell them I'll swap places with them.
Indeed. Beware the flaps of doom.
there there they can bare themselves in the men's room

Kind of ruins the dream that all ladies changing rooms are boobs flailing around and vag just on display. 😔
