My dad made one once... Just a simple one from the circuit in a magazine...
I don’t know where you would get one.
It’s been used by Brian Wilson on a few beach boys album’s and a few other artists have experimented with it .
It seems like it would be easy enough to use

I've had a cheap one for about 10 years and haven't progressed much beyond cool sound effects.
I also haven't spent very much time with it during the decade due to my initial disappointment at not utterly mastering virtuoso arrangements.
But it's a great thing to add textures and uniqueness to the mix when called upon.I usually drench it in reverb and delay to make up for it's lack of precision. There's a real wow factor when I do break it out.
As mentioned,I have a cheap kitbuilt one,I think it cost me $65.

I've never tried one but they would seem rather like playing a violin: you can learn to make it produce the right sort of sound but the hard bit is making the sound of the right pitch, so it doesn't sound out of tune or create horrible dissonances with the other instruments!

I played the slide whistle when I was a boy it might require the same skillset.
I had to make a cuckoo sound for a story in the assembly. My cuckoo started off with a couple of round of KooCucks before I changed it up to the right thing. I saw my teacher laughing.

I’ve tried one for a few minutes… it certainly takes some getting used to, but I imagine if you have a good ear and good motor control you could probably get competent quite quickly.

A friend of mine bought a kit for one when we were teenagers in the 1960s. You had to have almost perfect pitch to play it. A lot of fun, though!
I think they sell kits on amazon. I've heard it's easy to do ... as in at all, but exceptionally difficult to do well.
sort of like snowboarding, or so I've heard.

Played with one at a local misic store. It would just be a novelty for me.1

I tried to play it, it was fun. I could have bought one too but I didn't.

@BlueGreenGrey Jon's got the magic touch, awright. I rate him in my top 5 theremin players.
BLUES EXPLOSION #1 baby! I think he got the arm roll maneuver from Angelo Moore, though.
I went to the same small highschool as him and was classmates with his sister, who also had her own measure of rockstardom when she followed the dream to Manchester,U.K. Memory lane.
Apparently JSBX have run their course,as Judah Bauer is in declining health.
But they sure were a force to be reckoned with!
I have an autographed copy of "Orange" in my stacks somewhere. That's a tasty record.
