Strong enough to not need a bunch of masked nitwits to enforce them...

I'm not much into the whole boundary fad that seems to exist on social media. Isn't it just a "rule'?
Of course I have standards, but I'm not so rigid as to put myself in a cage.

Critics argue they are being misused as a tool for avoidance, control, or instant termination of relationships over minor, solvable conflicts.

@SailN1 Ok, perhaps. Having standards or things I don't tolerate I suppose can be labeled boundaries. It just has a bit of a negative connotation for me because it seems to be quite a viral internet thing, blech. It does appear hardcore with many. That's my perception anyway. It's certainly unhealthy to be too agreeable or tolerant to be liked. Balance is key, but when do we humans always have good balance.😁
SailN1 · 56-60, M
@Magenta I think we're on exactly the same page, but how we've come to see the "b" word in front of us lately is different. I didn't know it was a hot social media thing lately, so I can see where you're coming from and would likely feel the same way.
My experience was something positive for people who had a problem with the "b" word. I watched their confidence levels rise as they realize they don't have to go through life feeling like they are being taken advantage of, when they were doing it to themselves all along. Now, they have to watch out not to take it too far.
Thank you again for the discussion.

Boundaries are the first sign of conformity, inequality and stagnancy.
I truly believe life is change, none of the former.
Noticed you asked once: "Are you TRULY tolerant".
Boundaries are as well the first sign of INtolerance.

That's a thought-provoking perspective! Emphasizing that boundaries can represent a limitation—whether in relationships, societal norms, or even personal growth—highlights a critical viewpoint on how we navigate life. It suggests that embracing change is essential for personal evolution and societal progress.
The Role of Boundaries in Life
Conformity: Boundaries often enforce norms that may discourage individuality. By adhering to these boundaries, people might suppress their true selves in favor of fitting in.
Inequality: Boundaries can create divides between different groups, reinforcing social hierarchies. When people feel restricted by these divisions, it can hinder collaboration and mutual understanding.
Stagnancy: When we become too attached to boundaries, we risk becoming stagnant, missing opportunities for growth and exploration. Life thrives on change, adaptation, and learning.
Embracing Change
Change can lead to:
° Personal growth and resilience.
° New perspectives and insights.
° Opportunities for genuine connections and collaborative efforts.

They are a fortress.
Boundaries to me or not negotiable
I see that as being sincere ,truthful, and upfront about what I expect and what I won't tolerate.
It means yes I'll talk to strangers until they give me a reason not to .
I'll explain what I don't like ,but if somebody thinks it's cute to cross those boundaries then I'm not going to have anything to do with them, because people don't stop once they step the toe over one boundary and you let it down they keep hammering on all the others until you wondered how that ever happened.

I'm so sick of hearing about boundaries when in reality people, for the most part, love an excuse to be avoidant and selfish.
I can handle just about anyone without absorbing their emotions. I can help people and be kind without devastating my system.
Yes I have lines I do not cross, but these days people feel the slightest bit of discomfort and cut you off and call it boundaries.

@chernobylplaygr0unds Yeah people generally choose what is easy and find a way to justify it.
What really bothers me is we take these healthy concepts and twist them so we can be be jerks. Boundaries aren't unhealthy of course, but when people use them to avoid reality and push everyone away with a different opinion, we're not doing ourselves and the future of humanity any favors.
And I gotta say it, it's selfish. If people are going to stay in their own little world, walls up, we can kiss the world goodbye. We aren't here because we never needed anyone and we won't last without each other.

A few days ago I spent time correcting a mistake at work that wasn't my fault, knowing I wouldn't be compensated for the extra time, and actually set back because it would appear on the record like I didn't meet my deadline. Because I didn't want to tell the customer he had to call corporate to fix the issue.
I have no boundaries.

@SailN1 Easier said than done. What most people (including me) don't realize about boundaries is once they are set, yes, they offer extreme protection and insulation. Like I said, they are impenetrable. The boundaries don't just go away though by wishing them away. It's not an impossible task. It's not an immediate "mission accomplished" with a celebratory banner one either.
After being artificially protected and insulated by boundaries, trying to operate without them is cold stone stinging. A lesson to all the kids out there.
