Make sure your filters and coils are clean. Wash or replace dirty filters and they make a spray to clean the coils. Hang blankets or sheets to partition rooms and keep the cool air in a smaller space. Insulate your windows like you would in winter and keep drapes or blinds closed tight.

Air conditioning is pretty simple, but there are some things to note.
If you have a single hose coming out of it to eject the warm air, that means it is sucking in air from inside the house, and this causes a negative air balance inside, which then pulls hot air from outside into the house via small cracks or spaces under doors etc. This warms the house faster than the AC can cool it.
If you have a two hose system then this issue goes away, but it is important to be sure all windows inside the house are closed otherwise the AC cannot keep up.
