What do you do when you get phone anxiety?

SW-User
I just don't talk on the phone... like ever so that's how i avoid it.
SW-User
@CrazyMusicLover Yeah, just sms texts. I thought everyone used them all the time? Here they've totally taken over from voice calls except for the older gen.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@SW-User They are used but I remember I used them much more when I had an old phone and I used to get more spam as well. Now there are sms tickets for public transportation, announcements from banks and mobile operators but voice calls are largely prevalent if you want to contact someone in an official way. I always thought that texts and emails were rather frowned upon because it's impersonal. As if you wanted to deliberately avoid personal contact.
It's good to know that it's not true everywhere.

Damn, there are even phone job interviews, skype interviews...It gives me goosebumps, to be honest.

@CrazyMusicLover Yes, that's true here too, lots of SMS's from banks, airlines and also your internet service provider uses it to communicate usage and billing etc. And you are right, texts and emails have always been frowned upon as being less personal but the problem we're experiencing now is that cutting costs and offering the lowest price has taken precedent over customer service. This can be particularly noticed with most computer and internet tech support as it's all located overseas now and there's long wait times and a huge reduction in service. My work is moving us away from voice calls and going towards SMS and emails and also if someone calls, we aren't allowed to give out our individual phone numbers, so any customer who calls has to phone the standard main number only with the multitude of call options, ie press 1 for billing enquires, press 2 to make a payment etc and can end up speaking to a different person each time. Customer service isn't what it used to be.

Yes that's the irony, job interviews are being done over the phone and through video skyping etc rather than in person which i really dislike.

I act like i don't have phone anxiety & answer. Only if it's important.

It's not that i have phone anxiety. I just don't care to talk to most people that want to talk on the phone with me.

I had a friend who would talk for hours. It was fun but it was about boy troubles & it's like every 5 mins she'd ask me "what should i do?" I already told her what she should do..there's only so many different ways i can say it.

She was deep into the conversation so it never felt like a good time to say "okay, i'm leaving" so i made something up & left easily.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@SailorMarz I mean, when you have physical response to the situation. That your body and also voice is shaking and you get brain fog, tight throat and so on. If you don't got those then everything is fine I guess.

@CrazyMusicLover i was in a group call the other day & suddenly i got phone anxiety. I'm usually more outgoing but they were talking about things i knew nothing about, and it made me feel inadequate so i sort of went mute most of the time. But it was okay because there was about 4 other ppl in the call lol. And i also don't like my voice & for some reason became very hyper aware of it during the call.

*sigh* it was just a bad day.

I do not answer my phone. It only encourages people to call.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@Thevy29 What do you do if you need to call someone?
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
I'll call them or talk to them when I see them. @CrazyMusicLover
Depends, if it's a call you have to make just get it out the way with and look forward to the relief at the end of it. Or just do what you did as a child and make believe, like you're some super important person in society and you're calling someone back with a cigar in your mouth and your crocodile loafers on the desk. People believe what you put out lol
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@Gh0s1 Lol, that's not a bad strategy! 😃
@CrazyMusicLover Remember: "Calls for the takin? Patrick Bateman" ;)
StokedFox · 36-40, F
Either force myself or say fuck it
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@StokedFox Lol, this! 😁
StokedFox · 36-40, F
@CrazyMusicLover lol I usually say fuck it
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@StokedFox I try not to because it makes my depression and anxiety worse in the long run. I start telling myself that I am not able to get anything done. 😕

Plan your call before you make it.
Who you need to speak to.
What you want to say.
What you need them to do.
When it's convenient to do.
etc.

You could fill out a postcard with your questions before you start !
Then just fill in the answers as you go !
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@Picklebobble2 That's how I usually do it. :) It's still very stressful though. I hate to think how obvious it must be from my shaking voice that I'm stressed.
AliceTinker · 51-55, F
No way through it but to do it. It gets much worse for me if I keep putting it off. I try to go and find a quiet place and get it over with.
Actually that's a big fat hairy lie I have two phone calls I should be doing 😬
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@AliceTinker Exactly. There are times when I know I have to put it off because I'm so stressed and brain-fogged that I would only embarrass myself. But it's for the best to do it as soon as possible.
nem16 · 36-40, M
I don't answer it..the people in my life have my facebook or know where I will be at most if not all times.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@nem16 You don't answer even phone calls from your family members?
Do you ever make appointments through phone calls?
nem16 · 36-40, M
@CrazyMusicLover When I am expecting a call,it's slightly easier, but said family members have me on FB so I can talk to them there, pretty much any time, and no I don't make appointments,I get them to. :p
SW-User
