@wildbill83 The whole point of the exercise is to imagine how different the course of human history would be without a particular invention. It is not possible for an individual to kill dozens of people with a spear, so perhaps the wars of the 20th century would have been less lethal as a result and school shootings would not be considered normal. Steam driven private cars seem impractical, so perhaps mass transit would the oreferred mode of travel. The way we are today is not the inevitable outcome of history, nor its conclusion . . .

@SunshineGirl actually, it's pretty easy to kill dozens of people with crude weapons when they're unarmed/unable to fight back (the lack of guns didn't hinder Genghis Khan/Mongolians any...)

mass transit what? before ICE engines, all we had was steam power (whether it powered trains or electricity for city trolleys). Without ICE engines, society would still be limited to 18-19th century technology; you still need a personal mode of transportation outside of urban areas (i.e. horseback)

You are making the assumption that the course of history is inevitable and that everything must be judged according to.how we live today. The point of counter-factual history is to imagine how things may have turned out differently with different circumstances. And, shock horror, to envisage improvement and progress.
