Back to school

My 11 yo niece starts secondary school today. She had orientation days last week and yesterday, but school begins for real today and finding your feet in a big school when you are only small is quite daunting.

I took her into school half an hour early, which is encouraged for the new starters. We found her form room and the locker where she can store her belongings. We worked out an itinerary of where she needs to be and when and I drew a sketch map to reassure her. She is sharing a desk with a friend from her old school, so at least I know she is not completely alone.

Her last lesson of the day is PE, which she loves, so even if everything else goes wrong she will go home on a positive note.

My duty is over for the day, but I am on tenterhooks hoping that our sweet little girl in her oversized blazer is not lost or in tears 😔

@SunshineGirl my twin grandsons started infant schiol yesterday... they will be 5 next month.... so cute in rheir uniform...and I bet your niece looked so sweet in her blazer ... they look so good on boys and girls with the sleeves too long... (I don't perv over children btw, but the oversized blazer.... so cute)
Justme264 · 70-79, M
@SunshineGirl indeed... although the school puts twins in separate classes... I mean splits the twins up
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Justme264 Oh dear, I hope that isn't too much of a shock for them.
Justme264 · 70-79, M
@SunshineGirl i think they will be ok... they knew in advance and sometimes they like their own "me" time awa from their brother

How are these days anyhow?

Tell her not to take any crap from anybody. Somebody gives her a hard time, punch them right in the nose!
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@GerOttman She's tiny and she wouldn't say boo to a goose 😕
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@SunshineGirl and they are the ones you never expect...

God remember that experience dont worry everything will more than likely fine . Remember all the kids in her year will be in the same boat and before the end of the day she will probably have found new friends and together they will all find their feet . Try not to worry , I am sure if anything were to happen the school will ring .
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Rhode57 Thanks!

I'll never forget my first day of kindergarten. My mother took me there in the morning and left me. No one could find my name on the roster. Eventually they decided I was an afternoon student so they called my mother and told her to come and get me. I told her I'd had enough of that and I wasn't going back. She informed I didn’t have any choice. The beginning of years of grief and boredom.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@hunkalove Not a good start. It's not nice when you can't find your place 😟
MommyLucy · 36-40, F
Aww, bless her! 🤗🤗🤗 I hope she has a wonderful time and I hope her teachers are nice and not too strict! 😇😇😇 I hope she makes some special friends and I wish her the best of fun! 💖💖💖 Tell her no matter how big she gets she will always be special to those who love her! 😘😘😘
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@MommyLucy The head of year is really nice and there are a couple of teachers who have done a lot of work to put the children at ease. But it is a big school with a wide range of ages and the teachers cannot be everywhere at once.
MommyLucy · 36-40, F
@SunshineGirl I was classed as special needs in middle school and high school so I had my own teaching assistant to look after me and give me extra help! 🤗🤗🤗 I went around the school by myself when I was comfortable but for the first couple of weeks my teaching assistant stayed with me lunch time and every lesson she would give me extra support! 😇😇😇 I did get bullied slightly but not much cause my teaching assistant was there for me! 😘😘😘

I don't think your precious niece is special needs bless her but I hope the teachers will still be there for all the special kids on their first few days! 😇😇😇
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@MommyLucy Thanks! I hope I will find out how her day was shortly 😊
Justme264 · 70-79, M
Fingers crossed that she had a great day...

How sweet an aunt you are!!
SW-User
So sweet hope everything goes well and she likes the school. First days can be very scary.
So cool that you support her I wouldn't know what I would have done without my aunt.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@SW-User I am excited and worried sick by equal measure. Her mother is collecting her this afternoon and I must resist the urge to phone and bombard her with questions as soon as she returns home. I was so happy to take her into school, then I almost burst into tears as I waved her goodbye 😥
WhateverWorks · 36-40
Oh man I feel this so much. My 11 year old just started middle school last Wednesday. You did great help your niece get situated 🤞🤞🫣🤗
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@WhateverWorks Thanks 🙂 Are they getting on well at school?
WhateverWorks · 36-40
So far so good. They haven’t been upset/unhappy yet when I pick them up, so that’s probably a positive sign. 😅 @SunshineGirl
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@WhateverWorks That's really good news! 🤗
emmasfriend · 46-50, F
I am sure that with your guidance and support she will soon find her feet.

Quotidie opus novum - each day a new venture

xx
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@emmasfriend I hope that will be her unofficial motto for the rest of her time in school 🙂
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
I hope she has a better experience in secondary school than I did.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Longpatrol I think she will be fine. Schools are much more child oriented these days.
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
Lovely 😊 caring aunt
biandlargeny · 56-60, M
Feeling the same; my 11 boys started middle school today too
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@biandlargeny 11 boys? You've got your hands full!
biandlargeny · 56-60, M
@SunshineGirl yes but they are fairly good boys. Not much to worry about with their behaviour
Zonuss · 41-45, M
Awwwwww.☺️
