what exactly is the right mind state while meditation?

i am new to meditation and i read alot about it in forums and articles but i am confused, some people say it is thinking in nothing "nobody thinks in nothing", some say it is focusing on one thing like breath or any one thing and not let your mind think in another thing, some say you shouldn't resist thoughts, instead it is part of the correct meditation to observe your thoughts without judging them and let them go

also i found them talking about consciousness and awareness i really couldn't understands these two in the context!

can someone tell me the right concept of meditation?

I think that you will find in the literature associated with meditation in our worlds various Traditions a whole assortment of techniques, aims and expectations. Even in zen, there are two distinct "styles". Maybe read up a bit and see what takes your fancy.

The only form I have tried personally is that of concentration on the breath. To try this is to become immediately aware of just how noisy our minds are, of how random our thoughts can be, ideas popping up apparently unwilled.

Watch the breath. Concentrate on the breath. In. Out. When any wandering of the mind is noticed, gently return to the breath.

After just a few weeks we can find, when not formally meditating, that we "catch" ourselves thinking about unpaid bills and many other virtually random thoughts triggered by the world around us. Coming back to ourselves, as it were, we can perhaps notice the flowers, see the trees - enjoy a more centered state of being.

Every little helps! The effort required is, I have found, worthwhile. Other outcomes are perhaps incalculable.

@SW-User thank you for that great answer

so the purpose of meditation is to clear mind from thoughts and observe thoughts when they arise in our mind and just return back to the focu on breath so we are training our mind to observe our thoughts?

@salwa Well, that is one purpose. Others can be found if we look for them. Myself, I think they all revolve around the "letting go" of our perceived "self" as being the centre of importance. And opening to a wider world that can be full of surprises. Maybe not getting rid of the ego, but certainly not taking it too seriously...😀

The important thing is to start.

PS. Yes, to observe the passing thoughts, rather than suppressing them. Returning to the breath is in a sense something else. But I leave it to you to sort out the details, we all have our own unique path.

I always say, if you see someone meditating he could be doing 100 different things but I generally put it in 2 categories: cleaning up or being at peace. we have a lot of baggage within us which rob us of inner peace. certain forms of meditation help to make peace with our traumas and unresolved emotions , those i call cleaning. its hard to sit and be at peace in a chaotic space. the more we clear our emotional relationship with life and the more easy it is to sit in peace.
as for sitting in peace its for both resting the mind and refocusing the mind in a more constructive, pleasant state so we can go back to dealing with life. first , for calming the body I like to give each part of bady a bit of attention and intentionally relax each part. like all will say, if there are floating thoughts that doesn't mean faillure, they are just floating thought , be aware of them but don't pay them too much attention, let them float away on their own. to clear my mind I like 2 techniques. one technique is when you are sitting, eyes closed, watching the darkness and the floating thought, try to see where the new thoughts come from, if you do it right it pretty much ends all thoughts right there but its hard to maintain. another way is to carefully observe the breathing and when you have done this for a while you realise that you are not your thoughts, you are what is watching the thoughts. that is the watcher, the true self, the part of us which only is , just becoming aware that what you are is pure awareness makes you come back to the part of your self which is always at peace. this is called the self-inquire meditation. it is one of the methods thought by ramana maharshi, one of the most respected masters from the neo-advaita non-dualist school of thought. meditation done right is not an effort, its a spiritual vacation, it should feel like your mind is sitting in a jaccuzi. its oneness and bliss.

@salwa that is often the goal but not always. As people have been pointing out there are many kinds of meditation.

@salwa like someone else said, its called visualisation, I'm not sure if I would call that meditation, but it does have certain results in common with meditation, like calming the mind, giving it a vacation. this particular type of visualisation that you described is sometimes called a sanctuary within the visualisation practices. I was introduced to visualisation a long time ago in a book by Shakti Gawain called "creative visualisation" . a wonderful little book.

Thank you
Ugh....I've tried meditating for YEARS and still feel I'm fucking it up .

But....
I did listen to a podcast recently on it and discovered this :

People often have one of two problems when meditating -
1: their body seems to get loud . They notice their breathing , their blood flow , their thoughts, their hair itches 😅 ...their body won't shut up.

OR....

2: the world around them becomes loud . You hear the breeze, the ticking of the clock , the grass blades moving , the high pitch whine of the TV on standby ....the world won't shut up .

So the concept is - concentrate on the opposite of what your mind is drawn to .

If the world is loud .... concentrate on your breathing .
If your body is loud, concentrate on the ticking of the clock or the light on an object or the sound of the wind .

Meditating is apparently different for everybody - there is no "right" way for all . It's more about the process than any ",ideal" .
Mediation is a practice of mind calm , not some bliss centred ideal . (Although it is possible )

And someone once told me, it's not about getting your mind to go blank, it's about letting those thoughts that come into it, go .
It's about freeing your mind to let unconscious thoughts enter , to accept , and then release.

At least that what I've been told 🤷
