Its actually a lot more complicated than that. Iceland was actually named a few other things before it was named Iceland, like Snowland, Garðars isle, etc. But then around 874 AD a Norseman called Hrafna-Flóki (Raven- Floki, named that cause he used ravens to locate land) came to Iceland during the wintertime and saw how harsh the winter was and so, named it Iceland. He later moved there with his family and some livestock.

However the name Greenland comes from an actual “scam”.
A man called “Erik the Red” lived in Iceland around 980 AD. However he was banished from the island for multiple manslaughters and troubles he caused. He sailed west and found himself upon some icy land. To clarify the Island was already populated by a few people. Well, he felt lonely and so, decided to name the island “Greenland” as a marketing scam to get people to travel there.

Since people wanted to live in Greenland, hence the name, they had to travel long distances just to get there, so it was likely they wouldn’t have enough resources to get back home when they saw that the name was indeed, a marketing scam, so many of them had to stay.
