I prefer sitting across from them.
I know that might sound a little distant, but it's really not.
I like being able to look at someone when we're talking, especially someone I love. I want to see their face, look into their eyes, and enjoy the conversation. Plus, sitting across from each other gives us both a little room to eat and move around comfortably.
Now, if we're on the couch watching a movie or just relaxing, that's different. I want to be right beside them, holding hands and snuggling. But over dinner? I want to look at the face I love straight on while we're talking.

Across the table and then my child decides which one of us she will sit next to.
Harmonium1923 · 56-60, M
Usually across.
If possible, next to him
PerfectionOfTheHeart · 46-50, F
@V00dooLovesTheMoon Thought more would’ve answered this.
@PerfectionOfTheHeart It's more intimate
JustNik · 51-55, F
If we’re alone, we sit across. I give him the side that has the best view of a TV. 😂
OutoftheGloom · 46-50, F
I always used to sit opposite my husband, we used to hold hands across the table or I'd play with his hand or fingers whilst we waited for the food.

He will be saying “ OMG don’t stop “ as his eyes roll back in his head.
The waitress will be asking if he’s having a heart attack 😄

Diagonally.

@BillyMack Always the rebel.
DownTheStreet · 56-60, M
It depends. Sometimes opposite sometimes beside. Also are you baking anything, I’m hungry.
PerfectionOfTheHeart · 46-50, F
@DownTheStreet Yep. Today is raspberry and sweet orange thumbprint cookies, along with chess squares, and cinnamon sugar pecans. Think that’s all the baking. I’m scaling back this year and focusing on what people like the most.

Usually across the table from them. I would rather look into their eyes when we talk than bump elbows and hips as we eat.

I have not dated in 13 years and having been blow up once in the Army I am partially deaf in my right ear. So, if I had a date, I sit across from her to see her and everything @Bexsy said in her reply.
Now if the dinner plans are set and we are going out just to eat with no future plans to ever date again. I will sit beside her on my right partially deaf ear side and nod every time I hear her say something (One I can't hear her with all the other background noise and Two I want to enjoy my food in peace)!

Across the table.
ineedadrink · 56-60, M
Across. Force of habit as much as anything else.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
Across the table. I've occasionally seen this too couples deliberately sitting beside each other. I find it intriguing as just not what I'd do or see most others doing
Separate tables 👍😅

As I have no person these days .. I'm eating alone at the bar a fair bit ..
Tend to defer something like that to her preference when dating or as a couple

@BrandNewMan can't see a way i'd be wanting to be anything other than across from the guy
BrandNewMan · 61-69, M
@ChilledStone Nothing wrong with that.
Sitting side by side when eating at the bar works pretty well .. but what ever works
