Nigerian mythology is the same way. Every form of mythology involves surrounding areas and intertwines with neighboring mythology.
Greece is also a modern state. Back then, "Greece" referred to a collection of city-state where they spoke the Greek language. But just talking about the regions, Greece and Nigeria both have culture and civilization that goes back before the modern governments.

Memnon should absolutely be played by a black actor when depicted. But keep in mind, he's black in ancient descriptions because he's from Ethiopia. The Greek gods and heroes were portrayed as white to look like the Greeks themselves. So changing that does feel like making Greek culture less Greek.

Yes the Greeks had issues with the Gauls, Celts and other northern peoples, yet it was the Romans that called the whole group barbarians, as an insult.

Yes, barbaros was Greek for one that didn't speak greek. Yet that wasn't a negative slang term among the Greeks. Everyone that didn't speak greek, including the phonicians(to the south), that applied. It was like saying "foreigners".

It was the Romans that made barbarian an insult directly towards the northern peoples Think the gladiators from Gaul to the north.
