@DunningKruger In 1828 Noah Webster published An American Dictionary of the English Language. In it he used simplified spellings and alternative versions of a lot of words.

@Jacko1971 Most of Webster's alternative spellings did not catch on, although a fair few did. That said, the issues with English spelling go back several centuries before Webster, and also extend beyond American English.
