It can sometimes help maintain minimal functioning once I’ve got some fuel in the tank. But when the tank is empty and I’m in the depths of my depression, I can barely lift my head off the pillow let alone read a book.

I second that. A book is like, you're embarking on a journey. You're seated in a vehicle and there's a potential to stir your direction..
I always loved books 📚 but some years I'm taking breaks from them, then getting back.
I've never been an extensive reader, apart from a couple of years in my life. But books have always been around and now I'm reading one, was gifted one and there's a third one pending to be read :) And actually I want to order a couple soon...:)

I wouldn't care about reading if I'm in depression. I can bet on that.
