"The Coffee Cabinet"-Creatures Of Habit

I have reached that dreaded age where I am getting stubborn about silly things. My mom and I are reorganizing the cabinets and for 30+ years this one cabinet has always been the coffee cabinet. Filters, powered creamer, what have you. The coffee pot is no longer under it on the counter, it's in another place and yet, I can't bring myself to put anything in this cabinet BUT coffee, tea, etc. It's stupid, esp since the Keurig is on the opposite end of the kitchen..
I said on a post earlier that we are creatures of habit. We love familiar things. Familiar things feels safe and are scented with nostalgia. I remember being young and watching my parents play cards, and the waft of hot coffee as I fed my baby his morning jar of bananas.
I imagine even after my mom is gone that is where the coffee and tea will remain until family members change it when I am gone.
My random share for today.:)

I often think that in many instances “familiarity” is equal or stronger than “love.” The longer one is familiar with something, the more value we place on it. That’s why so many couples stay together after the love has gone. Familiarity means “the known” its certainty, safety, security, within our comfort zone, and stability, even when what is familiar is not actually good for us.

The strength of familiarity becomes stronger the older we get, and the less we like change. It’s Just human nature, although animals hate change more than we do.

Growing old alone was one of my greatest fears, and here I am doing just that. It’s not easy. @ravenwind43

@Carissimi maybe the universe needed you to experience your worst fear before you would be willing to change it. I'm sorry that it is difficult.

There are far worse things than growing old alone, but the loneliness is painful. I’ve been lonely my whole life. I’m not changing anything. I’m too tired. @ravenwind43

I felt that strong sense of sentimental nostalgia, reading this. A lovely post, truly.
Sometimes those "habits", are comforting and give a sense of stability. 💕

@Magenta Thank you. It became more a sense of nostalgia as I wrote. Good to see you as always 💙🌼

I have been in the same place since 2009, and each thing usually has its set place. But I have accumulated so many plates, bowls, mugs, glasses, etc. over time. Occasionally, manage to have then all clean at the same time, and when this happens, I run out of cupboard space, and so I have to move food higher, or to the pantry (in a little closet). I have more room for dirty stuff, which is usually rinsed and put on the counter waiting for the dishwasher to free up.

I had to stop buying plates, etc., because of this problem.

I live in an apartment. If I had a yard I wonder what I would clutter it up with?

A shed with a hot tub in it?
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
@JoyfulSilence I wish it had a hot tub! It just has a lot of the junk in it from my move 4 years ago 😊

@ravenwind43

I take hot baths but my tub is too small.

One problem with having a yard is the need to get dressed to enjoy it (unless it is isolated or surrounded by a thick hedge!). Also, I hate dirt and bugs! And extreme temperatures.

I had some balcony furniture but I seldom used it. I left it for years and it rusted, and got coated in dust, dirt, grime, mold, algae, and bird droppings. I finally tossed it.

You are so right about us being creatures of habit. That is me exactly. I have to have certain things in certain spots. Certain smells remind me of my younger days. Especially the smell of coffee reminds me of my grandma and great grandma. So special and perfect!! Thanks for sharing this reminder.....🤗

@SW-User You know exactly what I mean then. Thanks for commenting :)

That’s sort of what makes a home “home” to me. Every new place, I’ve felt the seriousness of deciding where to put what because some things, you do not rearrange! 😂
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
@JustNik lol yes exactly. Thanks for reading, good to see you:)
JustNik · 51-55, F
@ravenwind43 you as well! My feed’s been wonky for so long it’s starting to feel like a treasure hunt. 😂
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
@JustNik I know! I am just fed up with it. I see you around but rarely do I see your posts! It's frustrating. Lol
Embrace any changes that are tolerable and start a new phase of life because we only live once and never know when our tickets will be punched. So life as I knew it before 40 was completely rearranged . I thought it would crush me. I took a look at my new future embraced it. I turned it all over to God without hesitation, and immediately the clouds lifted in my soul because I gave the turmoil back to him

@ravenwind43 hang in there
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
@reddAwg2021 I'm fine, I was sharing a thought... nothing of distress:)

It's quite common, apparently, for families to do things in a particular ways, that seem to be without any real reason other than that's how they were always done, i.e. that's how their parents always did it, so why change :) I think there's some beauty in that, especially in an age where heritage seems to count for nothing, and even anything a few days old is somehow out of date. Just my thoughts!
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
@PhilDeep Thank you, my thoughts are similar. The coffee and tea still are still in the same cabinet lol
I get it. We are all creatures of habit and find comfort in that.
My daughter changes around some shelves and drawers about two months ago and I still go looking for things in the wrong places.
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
@Ghostinthemachine There is that too. Lol 🙂

I welcome your "random" shares even if I don't have a response.

@SW-User Thanks, I thought it better sharing this than complaining about organizing cabinets 😁

a little time Capsule
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
@FurryFace You know what, that is what it is. A cabinet of nostalgia. Sounds a little weird but true :)
Zonuss · 41-45, M
It's good to see you have that close knit relationship with your mother.
Good story.
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
