17As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
18“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.

The way I see it people naturally develop morals. It's basically outside influences that are the ones distorting morals like say the bible, pop culture or advertising. When I mean naturally, people either learn fire burns them or their a bit dense and do it over and over again. I don't want to say natural selection because that's improper usage but maybe Darwin awards is more like it.
You either learn or don't.
Morals are more of a life learning process, our brains have like a lot of defense mechanisms, irrationality as well as rationality to specifically protect us necessary for our survival. So it doesn't make sense that you give a person a religious text and then expect them to all of a sudden be like a perfect present, all neatly wrapped up with a moralistic bow.
It doesn't work like that.

@SatanBurger Love you reference to the Darwin Awards.
I think that I disagree with you on people naturally developing morals. My feeling is that our morals are imposed on us by our families, societies etc. Remember, what was considered immoral in the past is now considered moral and vice versa. But, of course, this is open for debate.

I've met persons in my life who are not religious, who are not spiritual, who demonstrated more "Christ-like" behavior than most alleged Christians that I know

True, although from experience with in particular some Christians and Buddhists I definitely believe it could help people be more understanding and do good.
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@wakanda4eva Your attitudes just seemed so different to those I've seen from a lot of Americans (yeah, I know, big over generalisation), so I was just interested. In case you are interested, I'm Australian.

Belief in god doesn't make a person more moral and ultimately leads to a form of nihilism

Which one there's 100s?
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@Harriet03 Take your pick. None of them are necessary to be a good person.

@Bushranger Sorry, I did not get a notification of a reply. I would have answered sooner. Anyway...
Though many people do good deeds and lead a good life, those things do not make us good people. There is no one who is truly righteous. We all in some capacity do wrong. So pure goodness is humanly impossible. That is why Jesus made that statement. Because Jesus is purely good. He is more than human. I realize you might not accept that, but that is Christian belief.

@SW-User I didn't actually say that someone could be perfect, I accept what you say in that regard. Since we all have the capacity to do wrong, a person who makes the effort to do the right thing is, by definition a good person. Whether that is because of a religious belief or a secular one makes no difference. You follow a path based on your beliefs, I follow a path based on mine. Maybe the they will never cross, but that doesn't matter.
