Would you check a strange noise in the basement, or lock the door and ignore it?

What's scary to me about a strange noise from the basement is wondering what's malfunctioning and how much will it cost to get it fixed!

I checked a sound upstairs while armed with a short sword once. Sometimes this place just makes sounds that seem like someone walking upstairs.
