When you got married/live in relationship, did you get a joint bank account or continue with separate?

We did joint.

My son and his gf are doing separate. Most his married frlends are too.

We did only joint and I regret it greatly.

My son/his wife have both separate and joint accts.
They both contribute to paying bills and investing in their joint accts. They have separate retirements accts naturally, but both have some money they are free to control separately in the individual accts.

Separate and joint.

Essentially salaries went into our separate accounts and we funded the joint from them which was used groceries etc. Mortgage and bills etc I paid from my account.

Still the way we do it now we're on pensions although some investments pay out into the joint account now.

We have joint accounts for checking and savings but some investment/inherited accounts are separate.
Everyday deposits and bills are handled through the joint accounts.
We tend to view it as "our money" rather than as "mine vs. yours", so we've never had any problems with financial issues.

We have a joint account our pay goes in and we pay everything from the same account. We don't have "my money" and "your money" it's all just Our money.

Had joint, after my mom passed, received an inheritance and put that in a separate account, but still had a joint. The inheritance was used for significant purchases, newer vehicle for myself, update of the kitchen...

Oh, I remember that moment. I was so proud to bring my first married paycheck home with my new last name and present it to my husband to deposit in our joint account. He just looked up at me from his desk like I was an idiot and told me to cash it as he shrugged. The joy left my face and the tears and anger replaced it. It was at that moment he realized he had F’d up! We didn’t have a joint account! We had never discussed it but I had unfairly expected him to have it done.

Needless to say, he got it done the next day and I found out the hard way that the love of my life could not read my mind. 😂😂😂

I'd do separate until married or about to be married but joint after that. I'm pretty sure that's what my wife and I did but it's hard to remember the beginning of the relationship now lol

We had a joint account and it wasn’t a problem.
joint. he deposits, I pay the bills. if he wrote checks the only place they could be cashed would be a pharmacy
We did joint for a different reason. Now we both have our own and I want her name off the joint account

@Justafantasy I believe it will be easier to open a new account. Just saying
@Canicu69 I know. Already have elsewhere, just that's been MY account damn near 20 years before I met her

Joint accounts are a good idea, but I also think it’s a good idea for every woman to have her own separate account
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@Jenny1234 Even if she feel secure in the relationship?
Straylight · 31-35, F
We switched to joint when we moved in together.

His money goes into the joint account to pay for everything. My money goes into my account for me
Ours are separate but we have each other's details on apple/google pay

Are there any benefits to joint accounts?
@MicrowaveDinner Not with a gf.

But in most jurisdictions, the household resources of a married couple are shared anyway, regardless of the pots you have them in.

A joint account makes it easier for moving resources around.

Additionally, titling accounts differently increases your coverage under the FDIC/appropriate insurance authority--you can have a joint acct, one in the husband's name in trust for the wife, the same with the wife in trust for the husband, etc.
@SomeMichGuy thanks for explaining!
@MicrowaveDinner Np.

The multiple accounts can be useful.
