Do some Americans seriously think Australians are poor?

Do some Americans think all Australians live in the bush among the kangaroos, snakes and spiders? That we live on dirt in The Northern Territory?

There are lots of Australians who rely on the government, but there's no need to generalise that.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
Hahahaahahaahhaa omg this is hilarious is this what you guys think that we think?

We/ I don’t think you guys are poor we just imagine you living more rural. I imagine aussies are outside a lot. I/we assume that bc of the conditions of the continent. That Doesn’t equate to being poor

I imagine aussies as red neck Brit’s. 😂
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@whowasthatmaskedman I do not need any point of reference. I live in Australia and am fully cognisant of the population distribution.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@KiwiBird (The reference was for our less fortunate US friends))😷

Don't take this the wrong way but, I don't think typical Americans think about Australians.

I used to think more fondly towards Australia than I do now. And it was contact with Australians here on SW that turned me off. Some, not all, are real dicks. I suppose that is probably true about people anywhere.

When I do think of Australians, I don't think of them living in the bush among the kangaroos, snakes and spiders - unless I'm thinking of Steve Irwin's family. BTW, they register like an 11 on the standard cool factor, IMO.
Ontheroad · M
The unfortunate truth is that some Americans believe most anything you can imagine, the absurd included. Personally I've never met or known any who think all Australians live in the bush, but I guarantee there are those who do.

The vast majority of us think Australians are much like us, have the same living standards, etc. Please don't think we are all ignorant fools 😁.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Ontheroad What are you guys talking about the bush
Ontheroad · M
@DeluxedEdition The outback, out in the sticks, etc. Most Australians live in towns and cities just like we do in the U.S.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Ontheroad I didn’t think anyone lived in the bush I assumed it wasn’t habitable
I’m sure some folk think Wales is all coal mines and steelworks with coal coloured rivers!
Which it was......

All I have seen about Australia is that your government became totalitarian after covid and saw photos of a gang of armed police officers beating up a couple that dared leave their home in search of food because they were hungry and arresting them after they were lying motionless on the street. Poor as in unfortunate in that regard, yes. And then no other photos were seen since.
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@Abstraction IKR. I live in Oz. The claims she is referring to were all false and the photos from different dated and non-covid related events. The government then was Liberal as well which confuses Americans as it is a misnomer in comparison with American politics.
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@KiwiBird Are you sure? Almost all the false claims I saw, all over faceboook and picked up by US media, were mostly about the Vic Labor government and Dan Andrews in particular, and if you recall - state and even libs tried to cash in on it.

@Abstraction There were several from the NT as I recall. Certainly some of the photographs that were put up.

@CestManan The only reason convicts were transported to Australia was because you guys kicked the British out of the UK. Prior to the war of Independence the UK used to transport convicts to the US.
Between 1788 and 1868 more than 160,000 convicts were transported to Australia

Between 1718 and 1775 over 60,000 convicts were transported from the British Isles to America, mainly to Maryland and Virginia, to be sold as slaves or indentured servants to the highest bidder.

Do some Americans seriously think

Mindful · 56-60, F
Some people think that all Texans live on ranches, wear cowboy hats and boots and ride horses, carry rifles to shoot snakes. Well. Most Texans do own a pair of boots. At least one cowboy hat. And someone in the family or the in laws has a gun. But no horses for most, just dogs. And the cows are limited to those who have acreage. It’s not everyone!
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Mindful I wont argue the gun thing here. It is what it is.. But do you really need an F150 to go shopping?😷
Mindful · 56-60, F
@whowasthatmaskedman actually you do! That or get in a wreck because you won’t be seen and you can’t see past anything smaller than a sport suv. It’s ridiculous except that Texans like hauling things in their trucks! And claim that’s how they keep their family alive: in a big truck! Anyhow, yes, it’s silly but, yes lots. Of trucks
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Mindful Actually, that makes sense.. In that its the same argument as the gun. Americans need guns to protect themselves against Americans with guns..😷
LadyBronte · 56-60, F
Why would anyone think that? Surely it is well know that there are a wide range of economic populations in every country - from the extremely wealthy to the poverty stricken.
Lostpoet · M
no, i always picture them in their back yard drinking a beer having a barbeque
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Lostpoet Wrong on all levels..😷

There is a lot of propaganda here like all Americans are rich and all other countries are poor.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
There is going to be a lot more poor people with the way the Governments going.
PatKirby · M
I can only speak for myself. Never thought about this. I'm sure there's a comparable distribution of poor people in any country. What I did learn was how to throw and catch boomerangs, which is quite fun and great exercise! Can you?
GunFinger · F
@PatKirby I haven't actually thrown a boomerang. I have to get one myself.
PatKirby · M
@GunFinger
Get a wooden one. The plastic ones eventually fail. Have you ever played a didgeridoo?
GunFinger · F
@PatKirby no. It is a cultural theft if you play with the didgeridoo if you're non-Aboriginal.
4meAndyou · F
No idea what "some" Americans think..only know that I don't think that. When I picture Ned Kelly's home, I picture a large one level ranch style house, a long driveway, and a patio with a BBQ.
4meAndyou · F
@GunFinger I am not a wealthy American, but the 3rd ex and I owned about 1 and 3/4 acre on a hill, forested, with a very small Cape style house. I picture that sort of size home for average Aussies.
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@4meAndyou Only 1/4 acre block, 3br home, short driveway, but definitely a BBQ on the verandah. That's must.
4meAndyou · F
@Abstraction My mother's house was .75 acres, stretched out a bit in the back and was too close to her neighbors on either side. They could have done better with that lot, I think. I had a lot of fun, though, refurbishing the place to get it ready to sell.
Bartleby · 51-55, M
I’ve never heard of that generalization.

My only beef with Australia is that I was doing a recipe from an Australian cookbook and it said to use a “punnet” of berries.

WTF is a punnet??? 🤣 (Yes, I googled it. Still.)

Do some Americans seriously think
Honestly, it doesn't matter what comes after this, the answer is automatically yes...

Yes some (at least two) Americans believes whatever thought follows, no matter how crazy...

That’s absurd, I would never think most Australians are poor at all. I know a lot of intelligent Australians on SW as well.

Don't know where you're getting this from I just asked for no pickles. 🍔
why do any of us care if Australians are poor?

I don't mean indifference in the kind of way where we're apathetic to the point where we wouldn't send aid I mean like why do any of us care about it to such an extent that we'd bar our children for hanging out with someone or refuse to hang out with them if they were poor?
nedkelly · 61-69, M
We have the same as other countries, we do not have food stamps. Many families it seems to go from generation to the next generation who are happy to BLUDGE off the welfare system.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@nedkelly About the same in America. When the welfare leeches give birth, it is like, "Alright, ANOTHER burden on the tax payers."
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
@CestManan Well some of them would get abortions but now they can't. So more "leeches" will be born.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Turtlepower I do think that making abortion illegal was pretty short-sighted on the politicians part
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
No, quite the opposite. 🤫

bookerdana · M
WHERE do you get these notions?? The PM of New Zealand ,Jacinda Ardern is a rock star on American television and we love you guys!
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@bookerdana You do realise that Aotearoa (New Zealand) is a separate Sovereign Country and not part of Australia. The First Nations people of Aotearoa the Māori and the First Nations of Australia the Aboriginal are completely different people. Australia has its own Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
bookerdana · M
@KiwiBird yes i do
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@bookerdana It just seemed an unusual comment (About Jacinda) when Australia is the topic of the post.

I don't know about Australians, but I do know that Canadians all live in igloos and eat moose meat with maple syrup.
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
You can blame Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski for that.
Iwillwait · M
So..no crocodile skin cladded clothing n stuff? 🤨
I've never thought that.

I think there are some Americans who think when people say Australia they are really people from France trying to say America but with a French accent.
pancakeslam · 41-45, M
No I thought you were mostly pretty cool and live in Sydney. Especially Rupert Murdoch. the outback is probably somewhat redneck just like small town America. you probably got some weird happenings going on there. 😬
