So now that we can identify as anything, is cultural appropriation no longer a thing?

@MsSwan I’m inclined to agree with Elmo.

It will never go away. The problem here is some people want the people who were conquered to forget who they are and where they come from before they were conquered. the savages that stole my ancestors land, religion and language can never make me forget my heritage and I'm not about to give up my culture because it makes somebody uncomfortable.
@calicuz But if another person who isn’t from your culture but now identifies as being so, equal rights folk say you have to go with it.

@LowBorn

Absolutely not, if their DNA says they are not my people, then they are not my people. But wait, how does that coincide with Cultural Appropriation?

I identify as a golden retriever. I’m a glutton for the attention of women who like to pet me.
over simplification is not helpful in this matter
and no
we can identify as anything,
is not really a thing, tho many agitated peopel seem to be thinking it is, and making shlt up about it
NO there are no kids identifying as cats an getting cat boxes in the school all bull sh1t

cultural appropriation is a thing, but it is more nuanced than that
don't let the fever of teenagers on social media affect you so much
do not let the outrage of old white christians on social media affect you so much
@LowBorn I do too,, but for how important it is to some very negatively affected persons and groups
di9d you ever watch the Dave Chappel show? he canceled it after 2 season because "some people are laughing for the wrong reasons"
they were not getting the satire, the criticism of the culture he was showing
they just wanted to hear the funny funny racial slurs.
there are real examples of cultural appropriation, but not everything that borrows is appropriating
so too, there are persons that ARE in need of being accepted for what they are trying to be
there are others just leaping on a band wagon. aiming for fame or whatever
@SatyrService No I haven’t heard that show. We maybe don’t get it in my country.
@LowBorn the show is less important than the concept.
it is WHY one wan ts to be seen in some way.. not merely that they want it
May I ask what nation?
culrual norms play a big part in these things..
here in the states for one,, the far west is way more likely to take you at what ever you call yourself
and so much hostility based on what a word means..
a c0ommon argument here is
Woman..for some that means ONLY those born with all the woman bits.. they would call a trans woman a transwoman.
but some trans women want to be called women. and take offense at any other label to the point of real hostility both ways.
consider Black. How black do you have to be to BE black?
In the states many persons of African decent are pretty light skinned..
and HERE that has made a lot of difference
there are people labeled black ho have lighter skin that some labeled white.

Wait…no…well…what?
Torsten · 36-40, M
well yeah when you can be any race, gender, age, inanimate object and species you wish, cultural appropriation is no longer a thing
bugeye · 26-30, F
was it ever a real thing? nowadays the only time i hear about cultural appropriation it's an entitled white college throwing a hissy fit over someone wearing a kimono or something.
meJess · F
No, because you can be offended on behalf of a group of people despite the fact that they don’t find the same thing offensive.
Really · 80-89, M
@meJess Being offended is a choice. We can be offended -or not- about anything, whether an offence was intended - or not. But if practiced enough it can become a habit.
Alyosha · 31-35, M
You're thinking rationally but those people don't believe in reason.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
It’s still a thing if you are on the wrong side. Two sets of rules.
4meAndyou · F
It's a thing, but only if it identifies as a thing...🤣🤣🤣
Thodsis · 51-55, M
That's something to add to the trigger engine.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
There is a world of difference between cultural appropriation and reverence for a cultural tradition. If you really identify with another culture, you are very likely to respect the elements you are adopting. And most cultures will readily embrace that.

If you are making light of cultural elements, mocking them, or adopting them without understanding the deeper cultural underpinnings, then you are not really identifying as part of that culture you are playing with it.
Really · 80-89, M
@ViciDraco If you - generic you - are all hyped up about your 'culture being appropriated' you'd better not possess anything tartan (probably 'plaid' 🙄 according to your silly lingo) unless you're a Scot. Hahahaha!
it is still a thing

Good point, if anyone can be anything, what's stopping anyone from being what they want to be, just for a day, hour or second
