Which way do you pronounce the word "Niche"?

"Neesh" or "Nitch" .... I've heard it both ways lol
WelshLovely · 46-50, F
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
@WelshLovely Sheesh!
It's French.

NEEsh

Nicht is German, completely different spelling, meaning, pronunciation ["nisht" is close, with the "i" as in "it", but the "ch" is a special sound you need to hear and work on in order to get it right]
@SomeMichGuy Never understood it, tbh. Who'd WANT to eat it? It seems it was invented to use up restaurant leftovers!
Lilymoon · F
@SomeMichGuy yeah it's nasty.... I'm embarrassed it's Canadian Lmao
@Lilymoon We all have cultural pathologies which we'd *really* rather *not* explain.
I’d usually say “neesh”.
@Lilymoon
Didn’t know either until 2mins ago! 😲
Lilymoon · F
@CookieCrumbs me too I just learned something 🤭
@CookieCrumbs @Lilymoon Hmmm...I think it might actually be old school Anglicization, American-style, which was transformed by more-informed linguistic exposure.
Lilymoon · F

Mikemcneil · 61-69, M
It's pronounced the same way as Quiche... Keesh
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
The Queen would say Neesh as it is of French origin.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
I wonderr about that. I'd tend to go with the "neesh" if I didn't think about it, then worry if I;d gotten it wrong afterwards. Sort of like forte as "fort" or "for-tay"?? I'd go with "for-tay" and then wonder.
Lilymoon · F
@ChipmunkErnie for-tay fo sho
@ChipmunkErnie I will say “fortttt” if I’m talking to a francophone
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@Lilymoon Sho 'nuff?
Ducky · 31-35, F
“Neesh”
I think it's someone with a blocked nose trying to say Quiche!

If I was lingering around the meat aisle at Food Basics would you give me a quick Quiche on the cheek?

SinlessOnslaught · 26-30, M
@Lilymoon They're a beesh.
LunarOrbit · 56-60, M

@iamonfire696 I say “nitch” even though I can speak some
French. It’s just what I’ve always heard here.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
