Not as harsh maybe as i had it. Many like me too. There used to be bootcamps. Or Borstal regimes here in the UK. Beating were common and discipline from the moment you woke until you slept. I went to one aged just turned 15 years old for stealing a car. First offense gone. I wouldnt go that hard now. But something back then called attendance centre was a place you went just on the weekend if you were or thought you were a bad a$$. They had circuit training with no choices involved but no beatings. These tougher times would shock most young people today. I dont condone Borstal but i do think attendance centres would stop alot more juvenile delinquency. If you do a runner from attendance centre then you get jailed if the crime fits the bill. The "short sharp shock" shook me up for real.

Frankly, I have no idea how kids live nowadays and how much it differs from how I lived then.

But everyone would benefit from gaining some practical skills and a bit of adventure, tbh. This entirely depends on the parents and the environment where people live. You can expect kids having more adventurous experiences if they live in a country as opposed to a big city, of course.

As an American, I was brought up by parents, schools and whatnot that America is made up of many different races, religions, ethnicities, etc. and anyone who talks against anyone else for such is un-American.

Boy, have we’ve gone backwards since then.

@Ducky
America has just re-adopted old British Colonial values, that's all!
common sense and socializing and playing outside with real people
@NativePortlander1970 not only did it just build strength but it had social impact too...what we did as kids built our character....we learned a lot by what we did whether it was the merry go round or hide and go seek, or tag you're it....we learned from all those activities...more than we know it

Everything closed on Sunday. I'm not religious but it was a better world when we could turn off the Great American Greed Machine one day a week and think about more important things.

@hunkalove

@ScreamingFox Very mortifying, what were our schools thinking? We already had our once a term school dances on saturday nights.

At suppertime, the TV is turned off, and we all eat at the table together. (Today, that would mean "phones and tablets off" as well.)
