SWeeps from”small town USA”?

Any SWeeps who have been to a rural US State, or have been in a small “country” town, do you REALLY see night skies like these? I’m only used to big cities with light pollution. 😔

What is it like in a small town? Quiet? Peaceful?

Even in a small town, the street lights will block out the light from stars.

I have been out in the country and seen the sky loaded with stars, but those photos are time lapse photos. The camera can gather more light than the retina of the human eye can, so the photos reveal a lot more.

Even up in the mountains, where I have seen some spectacular skies, I have not seen star clouds like that.

@DrWatson altitude as well helps! See the video I posted. Most of Colorado is over a mile in altitude in addition to the lack of light.

Less atmosphere is why. No clouds, no fog, no smog, nothing to interfere.

I'm not one of the people you seeked an answer from, but here in Norway you'lll see that most every night unless you live in a big city like Oslo, Bergen or Trondheim

Have you seen the northern lights?

@XenonRush I have. Altho, they're even prettier when you're further north

Better than that even. The night sky crossing the border from Colorado into Wyoming is better. You're around 6,000 feet there and away from everything.

The biggest town there is around population 3! Rockport Colorado.

The altitude makes a huge difference! Plus the added benefits of being away from all the lights.

Not Rockport, yet this similar...

Yes. I was born in a small rural town in western Nebraska, and even the lights from that town would interfere with the stars a bit...but we were three miles north of town, and some of our relatives were even further out...and when we went to visit them, THEN we saw stars a bit like that.

Grew up in rural New England and there was still too much light pollution from the nearby large cities. Heading north to the small villages of New Hampshire or Vermont.... very peaceful

Quiet peaceful and a sky full of stars. Not time lapsed like those pictures but literally millions of stars

What small towns do you know the best?

@XenonRush I'm sure there is hundreds. But from my experience the several in Eastern Washington are great. Tonasket,Republic, Curlew, Northport, Several in eastern Oregon as well and on further south into Nevada. Was just in Nevada in July several towns after dark. Great Sky view.

I'm not exactly in a small town
35 miles from a major city USA & I get skies like that
I've never lived in a town that small, but I've been to Prineville, Oregon, which is a little high desert town that only continues to exist because of the reservoir of the same name. There's also a resort on one side of the reservoir, and unimproved camping on the other side.

Yes, the sky is that clear. The longer you lie there on the dock looking at it, the more stars you see. You can get lost for hours.

Is it a nice town?
@LordShadowfire
@XenonRush I remember it being pleasant. Most of the folks who lived out there permanently, did so because they wanted to take it easy away from big city life, free of drama. I do remember that the permanent residents don't care for the resort, but they put up with it because money.

I have seen brighter skies out in rural Illinois but it's never like those pictures. Maybe if I was out in Alaska or something

I def live in a rural area and I have never seen them this vivid. This looks like enhanced photos. Like if you muted it all and desaturated the colors it would look where I live.
